Jan-24-18  JPi: Yes 49...a4!? was a better try. Still a team of 3 pawns vs B offers winning chance. Yet 40.Rxa7 instead of 40.Rh7(?) let Black with a very difficult position. I don't understand why Carlsen played it (Move 40... time pressure?) as he intended to exchange his B for the king side pawns. Ok may be not a Master piece, but still a great game.
Jan-24-18  Bruce Graham: Not a squeak out of the pampered goldfish crowd. Crickets.
Jan-25-18  lentil: I went over the game in Chessbomb. It was amazing (amusing?) that Stockfish's evaluation after move 50 just gradually increased move to move, without So playing any pink (and barely any dim blue) moves. SF just gradually realized the So's position was hopeless. I bet MC knew this at move 50.
Jan-25-18  mprodrigues: To me the highlights of the game were 23. e6! followed by 24. Kf3 and 40. Rh7 getting rid of the opposite colour bishop and getting three strong connected pawns.

Jan-25-18  Ulhumbrus: Instead of 21...Qb6, 21...Bc5 avoids obstructing the attack of the queen by the bishop

An alternative to 25...Rad8 is 25..f5 so as to deny the square g6 to White's bishop.

The sequel eg the use which Carlsen makes of the square g6 for Carlsen's bishop suggests that Carlsen made better use of such assets as he possessed than So made good use of such assets as So possessed, and that Carlsen outplayed his opponent and won in the way that Lasker might have done.

Jan-25-18  Pulo y Gata: Maybe Wesley is just doing a Fischer. He will never win against Magnus before he beats him in the coming WCC.
Jan-25-18  lentil: <Pulo> har
Jan-25-18  BOSTER: <JPi:The opening looks balanced>. If So played 7 moves by his queen in the opening, this is not good idea. According to Capa is better to keep his pawns on the opposite color vs own bishop.
Jan-25-18  ChessHigherCat: <BOSTER: According to Capa is better to keep his pawns on the opposite color vs own bishop.> I've never understood that rule. If you're attacking, it's true you don't want your own light-squared pawns blocking your light-squared bishop. But for defense it's completely wrong! What if all the pawns of both players are on dark squares in the endgame, your opponent has a DSB and you have the LSB? He will eat all your pawns and you won't be able to attack his pawns or defend your own.
Jan-25-18  john barleycorn: <Pulo y Gata: Maybe Wesley is just doing a Fischer. He will never win against Magnus before he beats him in the coming WCC.>

What a devilish plan. But yes, it makes <so> much sense.

Jan-25-18  Monocle: <Pulo y Gata: Maybe Wesley is just doing a Fischer. He will never win against Magnus before he beats him in the coming WCC.>

He will soon be publishing his article, "A Bust To The London System".

Jan-25-18  BOSTER: <John barleycorn > :<What a devilish plan>. Carlsen beat So 4 to 0 during 2015-2018y in Classical Games. If this a "pattern" (one win in year), it means that Carlsen has already used all his winning sources in this year vs So.
Jan-25-18  BOSTER: < ChessHigherCat>. I'm talking about bishop on e7, and pawns f6-g7-h6.
Jan-25-18  ChessHigherCat: <Boster> You're right, it works in that position, but I don't understand why it is a general rule because it all depends on the position.
Jan-25-18  Jack Kerouac: With Grandmaster's, patience is not only a virtue, but victorious. Magnus out-patience's most all.
Jan-25-18  The Boomerang: Positional Maaterpiece.
Jan-26-18  Pulo y Gata: This is a complete treatise, with lessons on the opening, middle game and endgame. 23.e6 merits an entire chapter to discuss.
Jan-26-18  scholes: what is winning line after 49 ..a4

  ajk68: 23. e6!?

The positional idea is that sacrificing the pawn saddles black with the bad dark square bishop, with a light square weakness around the king. This probably assesses that the isolated queen pawn will probably fall, or at least tie black up in its defense.

Jan-26-18  Kapmigs: I guess that's very easy to say from hindsight. Why can't you make such comments live, as the moves are made?
Jan-28-18  Jambow: Instructive Magnus looked like Capablanca to me somewhat.
Jan-28-18  Jambow: I think the extra pawns were the easy choice, Magnus had many moves that just played themselves.
