Aug-14-17  zb2cr: 21. Ng6, threatening mate on both g7 and h8, looks unanswerable.

First, maybe?

Aug-14-17  zb2cr: First, definitely!

Phony Benoni: Not obvious. I naturally looked at 21.Qh8+ first, but it doesn't work with h7 not covered.
Aug-14-17  Cheapo by the Dozen: Nxf7 is better than Ng6, since it obviates the defense ... f6, which slows things down quite a bit.

White surely wins either way, of course.

Aug-14-17  nalinw: Not so simple for a Monday because of the delaying defenses.

Even for 21. Nxf7 there is

21. ... Bf6
22. Bxf6 Qxf7
23. Qh8#

Aug-14-17  lost in space: Hello Cheapo,

I don’t think so.

21. Ng6 f6? 22. Qh8+ Kf7 23. Qh7#

21. Nxf7 and Black has nothing but desperate moves like 21..Qh2+ 22. Kxh2 Bd6+ 23. Nxd6 Rf6 24. Bxf6 Bh5 25. Qg7#

What can Black do to avoid mate as long a spossibel in the first line with Ng6?

21. Ng6 Bf6 22. Ne7+ Qxe7 23. Rxg5+ Bxg5 24 Qh8#

All in all 21. Ng6 is quicker.

I love Mondays

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to me that if Black answers 21.Ng6 with 21...f6 there then follows 22.Qh8+ Kg7 23.Qh7#.

Aug-14-17  ChessHigherCat: Ng6 threatening Qh8#. The black queen nobly tries to sacrifice herself with Qe5, but to no avail: Nxe7#

In the variants 21. Ng6 f6/fxg6, 21. Qh8+ Kf7 22. Qh7#

Aug-14-17  ChessHigherCat: <Infohunter> Make a wish!
Aug-14-17  patzer2: For today's Monday (21. ?) my solution was 21. Nxf7 +- which mates-in-five. The game move 21. Ng6 +- mates-in-four per Stockfish 8. So I suppose it's slightly more efficient.

Black's clearly decisive mistake was 14...Qc7? allowing the decisive demolition 15. Bxh7+ +- (+5.77 @ 35 depth, Stockfish 8.)

Instead, the second player can put up maximum resistance in a difficult position with 14...Bxe6 15. fxe5 Qb6 16. Qe4 ± (+1.12 @ 28 depth, Stockfish 8.)

Early in the opening, Black has had much more success in fighting fire with fire by countering 3. b3 with the more popular 3...b6 4. Bb2 Bb7 = as in the recent drawn GM game S Golubov vs A Pridorozhni, 2017 or Black's win last year in C Aravindh vs D Anton Guijarro, 2016.

Aug-14-17  jith1207: I got the solution without even realizing that the central theme of the puzzle is the e5 pawn defense. However, I could have gone wrong had I moved such as Nf3.
Aug-14-17  agb2002: White has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair.

White can deliver mate with 21.Nxf7 Bf6 (else Qg7# or Qh8# or Kxh2) 22.Rxg5+ Kxf7 (22... Bxg5 23.Qg7#) 23.Qxf6#.

Another option is 21.Rxg5+ Bxg5 22.Qxg5+ Kh7 (22... Kh8 23.Nxf7+ Kh7 24.Qg7#) 23.Nd7 and mate in two (23... Rg8 24.Qh5#).

Also winning is 21.Ng6 f6 (21... Bf6 22.Bxf6 fxg6 23.Qh8+ Kf7 24.Qg7#) 22.Qh8+ Kf7 23.Qh7#.

Other moves don't seem to be so fast.

Aug-14-17  Cybe: Comfortably choice:
21. Ng6 – mate in 3
21. N:f7+ – mate in 4
21. R:g5+ – mate in 5
21. Nd7 – mate in 5
21. Nf3 – mate in 5
and maybe some others…
Aug-14-17  paavoh: Unusually too many choices for a Monday puzzle. Took some time to decide on Ng6.
Aug-14-17  drollere: i went for Rxg5+, Bxg5; Qxg5+, Kh8; Ng6+, g6; Qh6+, Kg8; Qg7#. more mayhem.
Aug-14-17  saturn2: I took 21 Ng6. The answers f6, e5, Bf6, Qe5 and fxN only delay the inevitable.
Aug-14-17  jith1207: I like Ng6 Qe5 and Nxe7#
Aug-14-17  saturn2: The game is a nightmare for a sicilian player.
Aug-14-17  diagonalley: hard for a monday...
Aug-14-17  Monocle: Looks like there's more than one solution.

I went with 1.Rxg5+ Bxg5 2.Qxg5+ Kh7 3.Nd7, with mate after a few delaying moves. This seems to work. Saccing the rook on g5 looked like the most 'monday' solution, and I never even looked at Ng6, although it appears to be quicker.

Unusually complex for a monday.

Aug-14-17  Cheapo by the Dozen: I sit corrected.

Thanks, <lost in space>.

Aug-14-17  malt: Gone for 21.N:f7 Bf6 22.Qg6+
Aug-14-17  morfishine: <21.Rxg5+>

*****

Aug-14-17  JohnBoy: If 18...g6 does white have anything better than 19.Qe2?
Aug-14-17  JohnBoy: Yeah...

18...g6 19.Nxg6 Bxb2 20.Ne7+ cruises home.
