Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-20-17  optimal play: 17.f4!

Browne rejects the drawing 17.Bg4 and signals his intent in going for the win.

22...Nxd4? 23.Rxd4! Bc5? 24.g4!!

Black's Queen is trapped with the only 'safe' square f6 but then White can play Nxe4! winning the bishop next move, so Ozols calculated the material loss would be minimised by giving up the Queen and capturing White's Rook.

He fought on and officially lost on time but the situation was hopeless anyway.

This game was from the 12th round of the 1969 Australian Championship (1968.12.27 to 1969.01.15) played in Melbourne on 11th January 1969.

Browne was the eventual winner with 13/15 [+11/=04/-00]

Ozols finished equal 5th on 8½/15 [+05/=07/-03]
