Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-20-17  Marmot PFL: after 44...Nhg5 the win for white (if any) looks difficult. Not sure if 44...Nxf2? was desperation or a miscalculation.
Feb-20-17  belgradegambit: Only Rapport would play a Chigorin defense at this level.
Feb-20-17  ChemMac: <MarmotPFL> White eventually gets two connected passed pawns, and the two Bishops are much better than two Knights in such an open position. Without being Stockfish, just human judgment would say White is winning.
Feb-21-17  mistreaver: I think that it is only on move 15 that Black has gone wrong.

He could have played:
15 ... Ng6! 16 f4 (Virtually forced if White wants to achieve something) 16... Na5 17 Qb5 exf4 18 Qxd7 Rxd7 19 e4 Nc4 20 Bc1 And things aren't at all that clear

Feb-21-17  Ulhumbrus: 2...Nc6?! develops the knight but also obstructs the c pawn

4...Bxf3? doubles White's f pawn but it concedes the bishop pair and also strengthens White's centre

8...Bxc3? concedes the second bishop and strengthens further White's centre

After 9 bxc3 Black has a lead in development but White has massive central superiority and two bishops for two knights. If White can make these assets count and if other things are equal Black is more than lost. There is just one cause for doubt: Black has a lead in development and White has not gained safety for his king yet. Although this can be of very great value to the opponent in the present case it does not appear to give Black enough compensation for White's advantage.

10 Rb1? gives up the option of queen side castling and so may give Black unnecessarily a chance to save the game.

Instead of this, 10 Qa4! prepares to castle on the queen side in reply to queen side castling by Black.

The reason for not giving up the option of queen side castling yet is this: Black's only compensation for White's overwhelming positional advantage consists of the fact that White's king has not gained safety yet. If White's king can gain even some safety, there may be little hope left for Black.

Feb-27-17  XHUCK: Why didn't Rapport take on h4 at move 40?
