  takebackok: No think Monday, 24.Rxb7+ Kxb7 25. Qxd7+ if 25...Kb8 then 26. Ne5 & mate, & 25...Kb6 or Ka6 26. Qxe6+ snags a rook & its gg.
Jul-01-24  hdcc: Dorsa Fin.
Jul-01-24  mel gibson: A long King hunt for Monday.
Rook sac then the King is defenseless.

Stockfish 16.1 says:

24. Rxb7+

(24. Rxb7+ (1.Rxb7+ Kxb7 2.Qxd7+ Ka6 3.Qc6+ Ka5 4.Qxa8 c4 5.Qxa7+ Kb5 6.Qb7+ Kc5 7.Qc7+ Kd5 8.Qe5+ Kc6 9.Qxe6+ Kc7 10.Qxg8 Bc5+ 11.Kh1 Kd6 12.Qf8+ Kc6 13.Qf6+ Bd6 14.Nd4+ Kd5 15.c3 Ke4 16.Qxd6 g5 17.Kg1 g4 18.Kf2 Kd3 19.Qg3+ Ke4 20.Qe3+ Kd5 21.Qe6+ Kc5 22.Qc6+) +M22/66 331)

White wins _ mate in 22.

Jul-01-24  stacase: 24. Ne5 Threatening mate didn't work. 24.Rxb7+ was much better. If Black refuses the Rook it's 25.Qxd7# Accepting the Rook and it's the same response from White with no mate, and Black threw in the towel. If Black soldiered on, it's the proverbial won game for White and one of those little sayings when you post says, "The hardest game to win is the 'won' game." See <Mel Gibson> above.
Jul-01-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: Quickly: 24. Rxb7+ Kxb7 25. Qxd7+ Kb8 26. Qe8+ Kb7 27. Qf7+ Ka6 28. Qxg8 c4 29. Qxe6+ Kb7 30. Qd7+ Kb6 31. Qe6+ Kb7 32. Qxc4... The king loves Mondays...
Jul-01-24  Mayankk: Not a straightforward Monday.

24 Rxb7+ Kxb7 25 Qxd7+ is obvious. Now Black King has 3 choices, all of which lead to loss of material or mate.

A) 25 ... Ka6 26 Qc6+ wins Rook

B) 25 ... Kb6 26 Qxe6+ Bd6 27 Qxd6+ wins Bishop

C) 25 ... Kb8 26 Ne5 followed by 27 Nc6#

Jul-01-24  TheaN: I considered <24.Rxb7+ Kxb7 25.Qxd7+ Kb6 26.Qxe6+ Bd6 27.Qxd6+ Kb5> to be Black's best line and White would still have some work to do. Apparently not that tough, as after <28.Qd7+ Kb6 29.Ne5 +-> White brings in the knight straight away and the rooks can't really help their King.
Jul-01-24  Cecco: After 25. ... Kb6, the best move, according to this engine, is 26. Ne5, not the 26. Qxe6+ that, apparently, everybody, included me, would have chosen. After which, with 26. ... Bd6 you get an endgame Q+N vs 2R. As <TheaN> said, "White would still have some work to do". I don't doubt that for a GM it's a very simple endgame, but if I play it, for example, against this engine, I expect it won't be easy to win at all. This is why, in my opinion, this is not a Monday level puzzle.
Jul-01-24  TheaN: <Cecco> oh yeah, playing 26.Ne5! instead of 26.Qxe6+ would be a line thought off over the board, because Black can't defend e6 anyway. In practice it does lead to similar material imbalance but White gains a tempo which is pretty crucial in the resulting position. I do agree that this line as a whole makes this harder than a regular Monday, but by lack of anything else it's not a terribly hard line to spot.
