roberts partner: Spassky was playing the cream of English juniors, who were at that time the best in the world and many of whom became GMs and IMs: https://nezhmet.wordpress.com/2007/... The top board was Nigel Short, and board 29 was future GM Stuart Conquest.

Dionysius1: Isn't the story that the English organisers ambushed Spassky, to create a headline for English chess growth? And earned Spassky's enmity.

Kasparov (used to)/insist(s) that his simul opponents were no better than 2000.

MissScarlett: He should have been forewarned: Petrosian vs R C Cannon, 1978

Maybe he didn't have Spassky on speed dial.

Dionysius1: Yep. I like your quote in 2015. It was quite the strategy in the 70s and 80s then!

HeMateMe: Walter Browne played a simul in Minneapolis years ago and there were several masters in the 20 or so group. I forget how they did but it was no cakewalk for Browne. I knew one of them, who described the event. They weren't trying to ambush the guy, but everyone wanted to play a celebrity.
