Jun-23-17 | | leRevenant: To err is human, even for chess players. |
Jun-23-17 | | MrCarciofo: What about ...Bxf2; Rxf2, Ng4 with in my opinion a strong Attack for Black. Not a good puzzle today. |

Okay, black missed it... |

 | | Willber G: <drollere: i had ... Bf2+; Rxf2, Ng4; Qe1, Rf8; etc.> Me too. |
Jun-23-17 | | Iwer Sonsch: Missed it.
A short analysis with Stockfish reveals e.g. 17...Ng4! 18.Qd6 Bxf2+ 19.Kg2 Qb7+ 20.e4 Qxe4+ 21.Kh3 Qg6 22.Qc7+ Ke8 23.Nd6+ Ke7 24.Nc8+ Rxc8 25.Qxc8 and mate in 6. |
Jun-23-17 | | patzer2: With help from chessgames.com telling me there was a Friday puzzle solution for Black's 17th move, I found the missed winning move 17...Ng5! .Stockfish 8 give the following winning line:
17...♘g4! 18.♕e1
If 18.fxe3, then Black wins after 18...Qxe3+ 19.Rf3 Ne3+ 20. Kf2 Nxd1 (-7.44 @ 31 depth, Stockfish 8) If 18.h3, then Black mates after 18...Bxf2+ 19.Kh1 (19. Kg2 Ne3+ M18) 19...Qc6+ 20.e4 Qxe4+ 21.Qf3 Qxf3#. 18...♗xf2+ 19.♖xf2 ♘xf2 20.♕a5
If 20.Qxf2, then Black is winning after 20...Qxb5 21.Rxa7 Qd5 (-3.58 @ 31 depth, Stockfish 8) 20...♕xa5 21.♖xa5 ♘e4 22.♖xa7 ♔e7 23.♘d4 ♖c8 (-3.45 @ 31 depth, Stockfish 8) P.S.: White's near decisive mistake appears to be the pawn grab <17. Nxb5?>, potentially allowing 17...Ng4! . Instead, 17. Qd3 Bd4 18. Ra2 (-0.50 @ 34 depth, Stockfish 8) avoids this losing possibility. |
Jun-23-17 | | dfcx: <MrCarciofo: What about ...Bxf2; Rxf2, Ng4 with in my opinion a strong Attack for Black. Not a good puzzle today.> 19.Qd4! and black is in trouble.. |
Jun-23-17 | | Marmot PFL: Van Wely trusted his opponent. |
Jun-23-17 | | WorstPlayerEver: I wonder if they invite van Wely again next year. He's just some punching bag in it for the money. It's clear that Dutch chess pretty much has had it. As it comes to the natives. |
Jun-23-17 | | JTV: Black missed a golden opportunity on move 17...Ng4! Applying tremendous pressure on the f2 pawn which can't take the bishop on e3 without losing the queen. The game could have gone like 17...Ng4 18. Qe1 Bxf2+ 19. Rxf2 Nxf2 20. Qxf2 Qxb5 and black would have been up a minor piece... |
Jun-23-17 | | Pasker: A random position from a game with no tactics or anything and call it a difficult puzzle? I don't understand. This is like find the best positional continuation or something. |
Jun-23-17 | | mel gibson: I saw 17 ... Ng4.
The computer confirms it's the best move.
The test move leads to a draw. |
Jun-23-17 | | saturn2: There is almost material balance on the board or even black is already slightly up (B+N for R+P) Seeing the main idea - which is that after 17..Ng4 the bishop is taboo - I claim some part of the point. |
Jun-23-17 | | swclark25: I also barked up the 17)..Ng4 or 17)..Bxf2+ trees. Best explanation for this puzzle seems to be from <chrisowen> |
Jun-23-17 | | swclark25: Why wouldn't White take the Bishop with 17)fxe3 rather than 17)Nxb5? |
Jun-23-17 | | ChessHigherCat: <swclark25: I also barked up the 17)..Ng4 or 17)..Bxf2+ trees. Best explanation for this puzzle seems to be from <chrisowen>> Can't argue with you there.
<Why wouldn't White take the Bishop with 17)fxe3 rather than 17)Nxb5?> 17) fxe3 Qxe3+ 18. Kg2/h1 19. Qxc3 drops a piece. |
Jun-23-17 | | swclark25: <ChessHigherCat> Did you mean 18)...Qxb3 rather than 19)Qxc3? If so, the lost piece in this case is a pawn rather than the Knight. Am I still missing something? |
Jun-23-17 | | ChessHigherCat: No, on move 17, white to move, the N still on c3. I thought you were asking why white didn't play 17. fxe3 instead of 17. Nxg5. |
Jun-23-17 | | ChessHigherCat: The online diagrams are confusing because it says move 17 but you have to go back to black's move 16 to decide what white should do on move 17. |
Jun-23-17 | | MrCarciofo: <dfcx> that's true - because if ...Qxd4; Nxd4, Nxf2; Kxf2, Rf8+; then Rxa7 and Black's going to lose tempos and eventually the match because he has to panic to defend his pawns. Thanks! |
Jun-23-17 | | NBZ: Let's see: Ng4 fxe3 Qxe3+ and now
A] Kg2 Qe4+ Kg1 (Rf3 Ne3+) Ne3! threatening both the queen and mate on g2. B] Kh1 Qe4+ Kg1 (Rf3 Nf2+) Ne3 is similar.
C] Kg2 Qe4+ Kh3 Ne3! threatening Qg4# and Nxd1. |
Jun-23-17 | | devere: 17...Ng4! 18.fxe3 Qxe3+ 19.Kg2 Qe4+ 20.Kh3 Ne3 21.Qd4 Qg2+ 22.Kh4 Qxh2+ 23.Kg5 Qh6# All other defenses lead to serious material loss for White. |
Jun-24-17 | | jffun1958: I don't understand, why this is drawn, because Black has 76. ... Nd3+, forking king and rook, and should win. |
Jun-24-17 | | Gregor Samsa Mendel: <jffun1958>--After 76..Nd3+ 77 Kg2 black's rook is attacked, which gives white time to save his rook. |
Jun-24-17 | | jffun1958: <Gregor Samsa Mendel>--Yes, of course, thank you. |
