White almost threatens mate. If he doesn't take advantage quickly, Black can chase and even trap his queen. The only real shot to divert Black's queen is the game line. Black's only real try at defense other than the game line is to move a night to attack Black's queen. Wait. Two of the three possible knight attacks fail quickly and miserably. But 29 Bc2 N(e)f5
30 Bxe4 Nxh6
31 Rxh6 gxf4
isn't quite as obvious a win for White as the other lines. OK. Maybe this is Friday-worthy after all. :) |

The line I tried was 30 Ne6 Nxe6 (virtually forced, since Qxg7# and both Rooks are threatened, and Nf5? blocks the Queen) 31 Bxe6 Ng8 (the Bishop is immune, and 32 Bf5 is threatened) 32 Qh5, with what seems - unless I missed a major refutation somewhere - to be a good spot for White (Bf5 is still threatened and Black is sorely lacking for ways to reinforce his King's position, with f6 blocked and d7 and f7 under observation). |

Kd8 and the discovered attack with check tactic 32. Qxh7+ Kf7 33. Ne5+ Ke6 34. Qxf2 +- to win the Queen for two minor pieces. P.S.: For an improvement for Black, Stockfish 8's suggestion 19...Rde8 = (0.00 @ 34 ply) is better than the game move 19...Bxe2 allowing 20. Nxe2 ⩲ (+0.22 @ 34 ply). |

And even then, it took me a moment to realize that Black's queen couldn't just take the knight. Then, it all fell into place, including the nifty Ne5+. So smooth. |
