Penguincw: Only Kasparov's 3rd white loss to Short. The other 2 were a blitz and rapid game: Kasparov vs Short, 2011 (blitz) and Kasparov vs Short, 1987 (rapid).
Apr-26-15  RookFile: Kasparov wasn't allowed to play on auto-pilot in this game. I think Short's opening choice was shrewd.
Apr-27-15  Xonatron: I think 33. Qc2 was actually made after the time ran out. Not that it matters.
Apr-28-15  Anulaibhar: What's wrong with 27.Rxb7 ?
Apr-28-15  MagnusVerMagnus: < Anulaibhar: What's wrong with 27.Rxb7 ? > ??? I can not see either, looks like he could double on the 7th after that as well. Kaspy was a little tight at the beginning of the match it seems, probably low on time as he flagged is my guess.

Penguincw: And as it turns out, this game is the only game Kasparov loses in the entire match, and it's by time. :|

G probably didn't want to allow the intermezzo Ra1+ pushing the white K to h2 and losing the guard of f2, plus the K would be 1 square further from the center in an ending. Besides, tripling is a good idea, since after the natural reply Rb8 white could exchange a pair of rooks and remain stronger on the 7th AND back rank. Then on general principle, he's reducing the opponents counterplay.

So its not that there is something "wrong" with Rxb7. Qb1 is simply a better move, and the b7 pawn isn't going anywhere. It will fall anyway.

It's also my guess that it entered into G's mind that following a plan as such, the worst he could do is draw with opposite color bishops.

May-08-15  Nerwal: In blitz, it's customary to avoid giving the opponent even a shade of counterplay if you can, because it will cost time and nervous drain to calculate dangerous lines and gives no room for a further mistake; as a rule you want to keep things under control as much as possible. So 27. ♕b1 avoiding ♖a1+ is natural. He might have played differently in a classical game after calculating more deeply the different lines.
