Phony Benoni: Just as A M Swank vs Fischer, 1956, this was a round 1 match-up of the oldest (Crew, 79) and youngest (Remlinger, 13) players in the US Open.

The possibility of a rigged pairing is apparent, but's it's not completely clear. In the rating supplement issued before the tournament ("Chess Life, May 5, 1955, p.4), Remlinger was rated 2114, Crew 1575. Looking at the first round pairings we have available, other players in the 2100s were getting opponents in the 1600s. So if the pairing was rigged it was at least not outrageously bad.

If this was meant as a publicity stunt, it worked: there's a picture in the "Los Angeles Times", August 9, 1955.

GrahamClayton: Is the 66 year gap in age still the record for a US Open game?
