  Phony Benoni: Hardly looks Thursday Tough. 27.Rh7+ Kxh7 28.Qe7+ Kg6 29.Qg7+ Kxh5 30.Qg4#, with useless interpositions and such.
Nov-06-14  Cheapo by the Dozen: White is down the exchange and also has to avert ... Qxf1#. Forcing moves seem called for.

My main line is

27 Rh7+ Kxh7
28 Qe7+ Kg6
29 Qg7+ Kxh5
30 Qg4#

Alternatives for Black get him quickly mated as well.

Unless I'm missing something, this is again an oddly easy problem for the day of the week.

Nov-06-14  Steve.Patzer: To torture black further, 29. Nf4+ looks good.
Nov-06-14  nalinw: <Steve.Patzer> I missed the quick mate because I saw the knight fork with 29. Nf4+
Nov-06-14  nalinw: 11. ... Nd4 seems to be a gross blunder even for U12s
Nov-06-14  ocpman: I rejected 28 Qe7+ because I failed to spot 30 Qg4 mate!?!? But I did find

28 Qd7+ Kg6
29 Rg1+ Kxh5
30 Qh3 mate

Nov-06-14  agb2002: White has an extra knight.

Black threatens 27... Qxf1+ 28.Rg1 Qxf3+, perpetual.

White can deliver mate with 27.Rh7+ Kxh7 28.Qe7+ Kg6 (28... Kg(h)8 29.Qg7#; 28... Rf7 29.Qxf7+ Kh8 30.Qg7#) 29.Qg7+ Kxh5 30.Qg4#.

Nov-06-14  unferth: <blunderclap: I thought it could be done with Rg8+

27 Rg8+

then if 27..Rxg8 there's Qxf6+

28 ..Rg7 Qxg7 mate or 28 .. Kh7 Qf7+ etc>

28 ... Kh7 29 Qf7+ Kh8 and white has to settle for a perpetual thanks to the mate threat on f1, I think.

Nov-06-14  abuzic: 27.Rh7+ Kxh7 28.Qd7+ Kg6 29.Nf4+ Kg5 30.Qg4#

27.Rg8+ Rxg8 28.Qxf6+ Kh7 29.Qe7+ Kh8 30.Qe5+ Kh7 31.Nf6+ Kg6 32.Qf5+ Kf7 33.Nd5+ Kg7 34.Rg1+ Kh8 35.Qe5+ Kh7 36.Nf6+ Kh8 37.Nxg8+ Kh7 38.Qg7# works, but way slower

Nov-06-14  M.Hassan: "Medium"
White to play 27.?
White is a Knight up and White is one move away from being mated by ...Qxf1

I first followed the following line:

27.Rg8+ Rxg8
27.Qxf6+
<if...Rg7 28.Qxg7+>

27.........Kh7
28.Qf7+ Kh8
29.Qf6+ Kh7
and 1/2-1/2
So, I thought that there must be a way to keep the Black Rook off the g file and that is:

27.Rh7+ Kxh7(forced)
28.Qe7+
<if...Kh8 29.Qg7#>

28..........Kg6
29.Qg7+ Kxh5
30.Qg4#

Nov-06-14  plumbst: Medium. White is up a Knight. White's Rook and pawns are under attack.

White is easily winning but mating quickly doesn't hurt.

27.Rh7+ Kxh7
28.Qe7+ Kg6 (28...Kg8 29.Qg7#)
29.Qg7+ Kxh5
30.Qg4#

  perfidious: Agree with <PB>, as I have seen more difficult <Wednesday> POTD.
Nov-06-14  dfcx: Another easy puzzle, white is a knight ahead and to move, forced mate sequence 27.Rg8+ Rxg8 28.Qxf6+ Kh7
29.Qe7+ Kh8
30.Qe5+ Kh7
31.Nf6+ Kh8 (Kg7 32. Qe7+)
32.Nxg8+ Kxg8
33. Rg1+ and mates soon.

Hmm, <plumbst>'s 27.Rh7+ mates faster!

Nov-06-14  gofer: Black has the threat of perpetual check; <27 ... Qxf1+ 28 Rg1 Qxf3+ 29 Rg2 Qf1+ ...>. White has so much more!!!!

<27 Rh7+ Kxh7>
<28 Qe7+ ...>

28 ... Kg8/Kh8
29 Qg7#

28 ... Re7
29 Qxe7+ Kh7
30 Qg7#

<28 ... Kg6>
<29 Qg7+ Kxh5>
<30 Qg4#>

I know its a week for complaining... ...so, <isn't this a bit easy for a Thursdays>?

~~~
Shame on you, those stating that black has <Qxf1#>
:-)
Nov-06-14  gofer: <11 ... Nxd4> was a pretty big blunder even at U11 level...
Nov-06-14  Once: Well, um, yes. It's a mate in 4 with hardly any side-lines worth worrying about.
I'm not normally one to boast about how quickly I did it - my ex-wife used to be the expert on that subject - but I spent longer wondering why this was a Thursday puzzle than on working out the solution.
Black's king is stalemated and we have three pieces near to him. That screams out for a mating combination. And as the black queen is threatening mischief on f1, we need to start with a check.
27. Rh7+ appeals because black only has one reply - 27...Kh7+
Then we need a queen check. 28. Qf5+ allows the black king to slip back to the back rank, so it has to be 28. Qd7+ or 28. Qe7+
Then 28...Kg6 is forced. Now all we need to do is see the little sequence 29. Qg7+ Kxh5 30. Qg4#
We chase the king round the corner. Follow the forcing moves.
I suppose the key thing is not to be afraid to sacrifice a lot of material if you end up giving mate.
Ho hum.
Nov-06-14  pedro99: Routine
Nov-06-14  Swedish Logician: I saw
27. Rh7 Kxh7
28. Qd7+ Kg6
29. Rg1+ Kh5
30. Qg4 mate
and did not look further
Nov-06-14  Cheapo by the Dozen: Oopsie for referring to the players as "he".
Black wasn't a very good player.
Nov-06-14  cocker: Nice combination by any U-12, boy or girl.
Nov-06-14  eblunt: Black must have been Gutted to lose like that :)
Nov-06-14  TheBish: V Cmilyte vs M Gutad Iversen, 1994
White to play (27.?) "Medium", White is up a knight.
Black must have counted on the threat of ...Qxf1+ to win material back, as in 27. Rfg1?? Qxf3+ 28. R7g2 (or 28. R1g2 Qf1+, repeating) Qxh5. Or more realistically, 27. Qh3 (or Rgg1) Qxd3 and the passed pawn might cause some trouble. But White can just ignore the threat on the rook, as she has a forced mate!
27. Rh7+! Kxh7 28. Qe7+ (or Qd7+) Kg6 29. Qg7+ Kxh5 30. Qg4#.
Always nice when you can see the mate at the end of the tunnel!
Nov-06-14  morfishine: My first impulse was 27.Rg8+ but after 28...Rxg8 28.Qxf6+ Kh7 29.Qf7+ Kh8 draw
So, lets go sideways instead of headfirst with <27.Rh7+> forcing 27...Kxh7 28.Qe7+ Kg6 and now <29.Nf4+> forks the Queen and the game is over
I have to laugh, having spotted the Queen-fork, I completely overlooked the mate in 2 :)
Nov-06-14  dimgrid: I followed the line with 27.Rg8+. It took me some time but it works out fine and elegant. 27. Rg8+ Rxg8 28. Qxf6+ Kh7 29. Qe7+ Kh8 30. Qe5+ Kh7 31. Nf6+! Kh8 (another move unleashes the white Rook and its all over in a few moves). 32. Nxg8+ Kh7 33. Qf5+ Kh8 34. Qf6+ Kh7 35. Qxh6+ Kxg8 36. Rg1+ 1-0
Nov-06-14  PONFERRADA: 27. Tg8+, me decanto por esa opción.
