Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-10-14  Karpova: The annotator notes that <Mr. Charles Henry Stanley was champion of America from 1846 to 1857, and was an original and brilliant player.>

17.Rxg5: <Good play. Mr. Vezin had well calculated how he could escape from his apparent danger.> It seems that 16...Qg6 was a mistake, perhaps 16...Nb6 was better.

MissScarlett: (New York) Spirit of the Times, March 1st 1845:

<C.V., Philadelphia. - We are much obliged by your polite attention, and shall be very happy to receive the "ends of games" referred to. We have also much pleasure in accepting your proposition, of playing a game by correspondence, and in order to save time we take the liberty of yielding to you the first move; supposing you to play K. P. 2 we answer with the same move. On receipt of your counter move we shall give our reply in the New York Morning News of the following day, and would suggest to you an arrangment of the same nature with one of the Philadelphia daily papers. In each number of the "Chess Player's Chronicle" we shall give a summary of all the previous moves.">

I suppose this to be the first game conducted by means of the personal ads' section, it being, no doubt, more reliable than the nascent American postal system.

MissScarlett: <Source: G C Reichhelm & W P Shipley, Chess in Philadelphia, 1898, pp. 66-67> has <39...K-Kt5>, but the original score in Stanley's <Spirit of the Times> column (and repeated in his <American Chess Magazine> in 1847) had <39...K-Kt4>. I lean toward the original.
