Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-15-18  whiteshark: repost from the player's page:"

AlanPardew: <David Neil Lawrence Levy in <How To Get Better At Chess : Chess Masters On Their Art> (Summit Publishing, 1991):

<At the 1970 Olympiad I had an opponent from Brazil who tried to take back a move against me. When I told him it was against the rules, he said it didn't matter which square he moved his King to. In fact, he was right. But as a matter of principle I insisted he put the King on the first square he had touched. After five hours we adjourned, and at the time we adjourned I demonstrated that I would either win his Queen or mate him in four moves, and he still didn't resign. I was staying fifteen kilometres away from the tournament hall and I had to get up at eight in the morning to go to the tournament site. After all that, my opponent never even showed up!>

As can be seen from the final position, Levy's recollection of events isn't quite on the mark, but I was intrigued to discover Camara's bio here describing him as <controversial>. Is that a euphemism for <arsehole>? "

= = =

Just imagine Black too didn't like to travel 15 km early in the morning just to resign.

Jun-28-20  Agferna: Whiteshark don't feel so upset, such story is very common in the old adjournment system. I had something similar but a bit worse. Totally won endgame up 5 scattered pawns for a bishop. Opponent adjourns. His sealed move - if I don't make it next day I forfeit. Had a 200 Km business day trip, returning with just enough time to make the 7 pm restart. On the way back my engine breaks down stranding me on the side of road - dead water pump it turned out to be - you know hopeless. Important point I needed to win tournament and prize money. No cell phones those days. A wrecker comes by; says he has a garage. Take down his plate, phone, give him the car key and hitchhike 100 km ride back to city in time to win the game and the tournament. And yes, wrecker was honest - a few days later I went to pick up my repaired car. He couldn't believe someone had trusted him so readily and gave me a good price for the repair. Cheers
