Dec-09-13 | | fishcat: It looks like White's knight sac was valid, but he missed 21. g6, the only move. Black was kind enough to give the game back in the end with 24...Kh8. |
|
Dec-09-13 | | agb2002: White has two pawns for a bishop.
The white queen can deliver mate by removing the interposing rook with tempo: 27.Rh7+ Kxh7 (27... Kg8 28.Qf7#) 28.Qf7+ Kh8 29.Qg7#. |
|
Dec-09-13 | | Cybe: White’s mistake was 24. R:g6+ and black’s mistake was 24… Kh8. If 24. R:g6+, then 24… hg, 25. Q:g6+, 25… Kf8, 26. Qg7+, 26… Ke8 and black wins. |
|
Dec-09-13 | | WoodPushkin: Nice finish. 25. Rh7+. And yes <fishcat> 21. g6 is the missed knockout...
JAH love |

Dec-09-13 | | mel gibson: Dec-09-13 Cybe: White’s mistake was 24. R:g6+ and black’s mistake was 24… Kh8. If 24. R:g6+, then 24… hg, 25. Q:g6+, 25… Kf8, 26. Qg7+, 26… Ke8 and black wins. Yes I agree & I confirmed it on Deep Rybka 4.
The game was decided by 2 blunders -
one from each side.
A great game that shows the human element - making mistakes.
This is what I miss when playing a computer. |

Dec-09-13 | | Fabianx: I've analyzed several variants of 21. g6. The most interesting was (as it was very similar to the analysis of Once, but had a tweak: If the 21. ..f7xg6 or 21. ..h7xg6 it follows always 22. Rxg6+! h7xg6 (or f7xg6) 23. Qxg6+ Kf8 24. Qg7+ Ke8 25. f7+ And now the queen is still on d8, so the variant of Kd8 is not possible, such 25. .. Kd7. And now comes 26. f8=Q+
So 27. .. Qe7 28. Qfxe7 Bxe7 and white wins! |
|
Dec-09-13 | | framsey: Contra several comments above, this is NOT clearance. If we removed the rook from g7, Qf7 would not be mate because of Qg1+, and the Q covers the g file. Rather, this is attraction, since the rook sacrifice attracts the king to h7, which makes Qf7 check, and so gives an essential tempo to deliver mate on g7. |
|
Dec-09-13 | | TheaN: <framsey>
I accept your note on 'attraction' or more commonly called 'luring', but it's definitely clearance as well. |
|
Dec-09-13 | | kevin86: Mate in three by :27 ♖h7+ ♔xh7 (or ♔g8 28 ♕f7#) 28 ♕f7+ ♔h8 29 ♕g7# |
|
Dec-09-13 | | whiteshark: <27.Rh7+>, and that's it. |
|
Dec-09-13
 | | gawain: This is an unusual idea and fairly subtle for a Monday. I quite like it. The rook clears itself out of the picture so as to allow the queen full scope for her greater ability. To be sure, there is more than simole clearance going on, per <framsey>. |

Dec-09-13
 | | al wazir: With 15. Bxg7, white gave up a ♗ for two ♙s and a speculative attack that would eventually have failed if black had not overlooked mate. This game is a good example of the axiom that nothing succeeds like success. (And it shows that those amazing, brilliant multi-move winning combinations GMs play aren't always calculated.) |

Dec-09-13 | | BOSTER: click for larger view
This is pos.White to play 21. After g6
he win. |

 | | fm avari viraf: This position remains me of my game during the Gujarat State Chess Championship 1974 which I won the State Title & in all five times without losing a game.A State ♖ecord But the difference was that my Queen was on the open g-file & the combo would be Rh7+ ...Kxh7 & Qg7# |
|
Dec-09-13 | | BOSTER: <framsey this is attraction>.What you call attraction some players call decoy. |

 | | Penguincw: For me, Monday puzzles are getting harder, but at least I'm 1/1 this week, so far. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Chessgames.com should check the game score to make sure this wasn't a draw by Airapetian. |
|
Dec-09-13 | | Patriot: It's a forced mate with 27.Rh7+ Kxh7 28.Qf7+ Kh8 29.Qg7# OR 27.Rh7+ Kg8 28.Qf7# |
|
Dec-09-13 | | lost in space: I love Mondays!
27. Rh7+ Kxh7
(27...Kg8 Qf7#)
28. Qf7+ Kg7 Qg7# |
|
Dec-09-13 | | Whitehat1963: Took me longer than usual for a Monday. |
|
Dec-09-13 | | schweigzwang: Great, I can get a Sunday but not a Monday. |
|
Dec-10-13 | | Nullifidian: Almost missed this one. Again, I'm going to try to remember to do the puzzle every day, and likely forget after a few more days. I found this one almost too easy. 27. ♖h7+ ♔xh7 (♔g8 28. ♕f7#) 28. ♕f7+ ♔h8 ♕g7# |
|
Dec-10-13 | | millert: 19.Bd3! and the R maneuver g3, h3 as in the game works. White's mistake was trading rooks which would have left him with nothing if Black took the rook on g6 on move 24. If 19. ... Bxg1?? 20.Qh6 |
