Honza Cervenka: 32.Rg1 was good enough to win but simple 32.Qd8+ with next 33.Qxh4 is definitely better.

ajk68: It's almost like Karpov is trying to not beat up on his opponents too badly. It would be hard to imagine Karpov not seeing 32. Qd8+ .
Oct-30-13  csmath: I think he missed that as he missed few other things in this game. It was hard not to win it though since Maisuradze played suicidal chess. Funny thing is that she actually played opening quite respectable and Karpov had achieved nothing just like in many other games in this tournament. The rest of the game by Maisuradze is really puzzling as it does not look it would be played by a 2000+ rated player. 25. ...Bxh3?? looks like a complete nonsense.

This is lousy chess either way.

Honza Cervenka: <csmath> Well, it is rapid chess, and Rg1 was planned already when Kh2 was played.
Oct-31-13  Everett: <csmath> relax, grasshopper, here is a news flash. Real players (not fans who have time to kibitz and be critical of real players) see wins and play the.immediately under fast time controls. Sometimes it is not the quickest, but it gets the job done. This is something that strong practical players do to save strength and win opening stages of rapid events... And be WC for a decade or so.
Nov-01-13  Skakalec: Few words on <csmath><Funny thing is that she actually played opening quite respectable and Karpov had achieved nothing just like in many other games in this tournament.> That is the difficult part of the chess that divides players by strength: <How to play equal positions?>

Karpov demonstrates old words of Petrosjan: <"If you have a plan, than play moves according to that plan even though there are better moves en route">

Or something like that, you know what I mean.

Nov-01-13  csmath: This game does not deserve to bring in "Petrosian principles" as it is really not much of a game.

By the way, a player like Karpov is stronger than Maisuradze, or should be stronger in every faucet of the game including "equal positions." There are really no any particular rules about difference in strength of players. It is really all about results that makes difference.

HeMateMe: black didn't seem to get much for the sac'd piece. Not a good job of calculating.

Honza Cervenka: <HeMateMe: black didn't seem to get much for the sac'd piece. Not a good job of calculating.> Or not a good job of intuition. Of course, especially in rapid chess even unsound sacs can work but not this time against Karpov.
Jan-15-22  GrosserOnkel: Why 9. ...cxd5 and not Qb3? Is it just to exchange a center pawn for a wing pawn?
