Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-17-13  optimal play: <<<<<At Board No. 5 : Mr. Russell encountered Mr. Goldsmith with the "French Defence" ; he was, however, evidently quite unable to cope with his opponent, to whom he lost a pawn at the eighth, and a piece at the sixteenth, move.

The contest was prolonged to the thirty-sixth move, when the Sydney player resigned.

The game was admirably played throughout by Mr. Goldsmith.>

- Australian Town and Country Journal (NSW) issue Saturday 18 November 1871>

NOTES.>

(a) 8...h6

This is the beginning of his difficulties ; he should have played P to Q B 3 defending the P as suggested by the Leader.

Black's play throughout is very inferior.

(b) 15.c5

Well played. White never misses an opportunity throughout.

(c) 15...bxc5

As remarked by the Leader, it is surprising that Mr. Russell should fall into such an error as this, which evidently loses a piece.

(d) 18...♗xh2+

He has evidently nothing better. The game is lost, play how he will.

(e) 26.♕g3

Mr. Goldsmith never gives the 'Veteran' a chance from first to last.

Were it not for this redeeming feature the game would be quite unworthy of publication.>
