May-24-14  mathlover: Nice final position

sleepyirv: Black has moved every piece but his light-square bishop, and has found a way to misplace all of them. A model Sicilian from White's perspective.

perfidious: <She> went on to become a fair player despite this youthful debacle, being awarded the men's GM title and notching a few scalps on the way.
Apr-23-18  TheTamale: I don't blame Mogens Moe. I blame the Sicilian Defense.
Apr-24-18  Granny O Doul: Unless I am missing something (which does occasionally happen), 20. Bxd7 is an awful lot stronger than 20. Bd4+ as given. I wonder if there is not a misprint.
Apr-24-18  sfm: <Granny O Doul: Unless I am missing something...> What you say looks right to me.
Feb-04-19  TheTamale: And now maybe it's me missing something, (which is my basic M.O.). But the move played forces mate in 2. How is 20. Bxd7 stronger?
Feb-04-19

ferrabraz: There is no mate in two after 20...Ne5; 20. Bd7! (as says TheTamale) would be much better. Maybe a case of wrong score?

The previous comments are correct.

20.Bd4+ as given allows 20...Ne5 and the game is still in the pot.

Possibly wrong score and 20. Bxd7 was played.

We now have a quest!

The have the same move 20.Bd4+ over at 365Chess.com

https://www.365chess.com/game.php?g...

The game is used as the setting for a puzzle at http://wtharvey.com/b89.html but it is from this position:

and only gives as the solution 18.Nd5 and if18... Qa5 19. Nxe7 and no more.

The game is No. 438 in 'Winning in the Chess Opening: 700 Ways to Ambush Your Opponent.' by Nikolai Kalinichenko but annoyingly the free preview only takes you to game No. 437 then you you get:

'pages 257 - 258 are not shown in this preview.'

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id...

They miss out the one page we need!

Arghhh.......

Feb-04-19  JimNorCal: Has anyone claimed "Larry, Moe and Cramling" as a GOTD pun?

Good one Jim, think I'll submit it and take the credit.

Sally Simpson: ... and with a big Time Square sleazy grin on my face I have subbed:

"Larry, Cramling and Moe."

Sally 1 Jim 0

:)

Feb-04-19  TheTamale: Ugh, <TheTamale> didn't see the intervening knight move, sees why Bxd7 was stronger, and was wrong as usual. God bless <TheTamale>, though. I really like him.
Feb-04-19  JimNorCal: Heh. Good job, Sally!
Feb-04-19  JimNorCal: I wonder if we can jazz up the "Larry" part though. Dairy, Scary, Lorry, Wary ... none of those seem to work. Maybe "Merry Moe and Cramling" on the assumption that Mr Moe was pleased to win the game.

For anyone puzzled, Larry Moe and Curly was a US comedy team.

OhioChessFan: I think there's some sort of Pun Rule that in a group of 3, one has to be exactly the same (Moe), one can be the same first letter and number of syllables(Cramling), and the last has to be pretty close (Nothing fits for Larry).
Feb-04-19  JimNorCal: <OCF>, thanks.

Maybe we will have to move on to Eeny, Meanie, Mynee, Moe then.

OhioChessFan: Okay, I'll make up some rules for that. I have to agree that Mogens Moe just looks like there <has> to be a pun in it.
May-21-20  jith1207: Look at the Black's pieces after move 16.

They're looking like Fire Ants rafting together.

Well, they had no sting though.

May-21-20  jith1207: Yeah, same unanswered question:

Is this game a draw?

Or

The CORRECT final move was 20.Bxd7 for an emphatic White win?

May-21-20  jith1207: <free preview only takes you to game No. 437 when you need game#438.

They miss out the one page we need!

Way to go, Sally. I LOLed.

So, the conclusion is the final move is incorrect here, as this game features in a book regarding "Winning in Chess opening by ambushing your opponent".
