Jan-24-12  amaurobius: This is a good scalp for Hanley - after playing the Schliemann as black too! Starting with 14 Nxe5 white gave up a piece for a promising attack but black defended resolutely and in the end his extra material won the game. One suspects white could have done better and missed his way somewhere but I can't pinpoint where.
Jan-24-12  belgradegambit: As far as I can tell just an unsound attack.
Jan-24-12  belgradegambit: Actually 23. Qf5+ Qxf5 24.gxf5 Kg5 25 Ne4+ gives white some counterchances. The connected passed pawns can be dangerous.
Jan-24-12  amaurobius: <belgradegambit> Thank you - that certainly looks to be an improvement.

Penguincw: Biggest surprise of Round 1, along with Shirov vs Lyberg Patrik, 2012. All the other games have the favourites winning, regardless of playing the white or black pieces.
Jan-24-12  Whitehat1963: This is in the neighborhood of 250 Elo points! Quite an upset.
Jan-25-12  Shams: Somebody needs to start a game collection: 2700s lose to non-GMS.
Jan-25-12  zoren: convincing defensive game beating a very strong player.
Feb-06-12  gaatab: 21:qc5! instead of qf1 would lead to a draw...qg5 rf5 qc1+rf1 qg5 and so on. if ng7 instead of qg5 (to stop the mate on f5)black loses to r:g7+! with mate to follow. but sutovsky was there to kill...:) gg!
