wwall: This was the final round in the US Open at Ventura. Lombardy was alone in 1st place with 9.5 and only needed a draw to win it and win $1,500. Browne had 9 points and refused the draw offer that Lombardy made after move 10.

It looks like Lombardy erred with 24.Rfc1 instead of 24,Rb3 (if 24...Qa6, then 25.a3 and 26.axb4). Later, Lombardy tried 26.Rb3? instead of 26.Bxc3 Rxc3 (26...bxc3 27.Rb3) 27.Qb2. After 26.Rb3 Browne had a stronger move with 26...Be5 27.Qd1 Rxc1 28.Bxc1 Qc4, threatening 29...Rxa2 and 29...Qxe4. Brown played 26...Bd4 and Lombardy played 27.Qb1? instead of 27.Qd1 to prevent Black from playing ...Qe2. Now Black penetrates and wins. After 35.g3, Browne could have played 35...Qxe4 instead of 35...g6, but he was in time pressure. Lombardy then played 36.Qb7 instead of protecting the pawn with 36.Qc4 and making it more difficult for Black.

Larry Evans won his game and Browne and Evans tied for 1st with 10 points.

But white's awkward unaggressive deployment leads one to that conclusion.
