Oct-11-11  beenthere240: Hmmm a lot of those tactical firestorms I was alluding to a while ago seem to have flickered out.
Oct-11-11  Gordon1306: No dancing rook here. Not likely I venture to suggest.
Oct-11-11  beenthere240: It would be in bad taste to suggest that Carlsen is waiting for the 40th move. ;-)
Oct-11-11  DrMAL: i guess Naka just wanted safe known opening, keep eye on clock and don't get swindled out of draw...not such an interesting game such is chess sometimes, draw increases his rating by point or two
Oct-11-11  Kinghunt: The stage is set for a Carlsen-Ivanchuk blitz match.

tarek1: BxN and Black equalizes material. Anad-Vallejo is more interesting. It looks like the World Champion is taking the advantage over Paco.

tamar: Henrik Carlsen whispering to Naka that there are free donuts in the snack bar...
Oct-11-11  talisman: ♔h2 and offer draw
Oct-11-11  Ulhumbrus: Perhaps Carlsen has let an advantage slip. This game may be worth comparing with the games M Bertok vs Fischer, 1962 and Rubinstein vs Nimzowitsch, 1907 In the latter game Nimzowitsch developed his Queen to b4 instead of his Rook.
Oct-11-11  Gordon1306: <Ulhumbrus:> Thanks! I'll check out those games you mentioned.
Oct-11-11  DrMAL: yes shake hands and go for more interesting Spanish donuts LOL...old games not really applicable, opening theory is a zillion times better known now
Oct-11-11  Strongest Force: I'm surprised Carlsen didn't try for more

tpstar: Ivanchuk whispering to Carlsen about free orange juice and raisins ...
Oct-11-11  haydn20: Meanwhile Anand-Vallejo is a slugfest. Chuky-Aronian looks drawish to me.
Oct-11-11  rapidcitychess: I'm surprised they haven't agreed to a draw yet.

Too bad white's passed pawn isn't on the a-file.

Oct-11-11  whiteshark: I'd say no draw til move 41.
Oct-11-11  DrMAL: 35.Ra6+ always give check it might be mate LOL
Oct-11-11  beenthere240: gonna be hard for naka to keep that pawn.
Oct-11-11  DrMAL: it's move 41 not so many donuts left

tpstar: Nakamura should check with the Arbiter to make sure he reached time control.

OK, when does the fashion show start?!

tarek1: so draw ! let's watch Anand - Vallejo before Vallejo gets mated.
Oct-11-11  DrMAL: yes hope so seems there is something Vishy going on

Domdaniel: <Ulhumbrus> The Rubinstein-Nimzowitsch game is a good example of the type of ending where a Bishop is stronger than a Knight. I thought Black had reasonable chances of something similar here, but it didn't work out.

I hesitate to say that *any* contemporary player has the endgame skill of Rubinstein or Nimzo, so the key difference seems to be rate of play. Endings go by too quickly now - the subtleties of the age of adjournments can be missed.

Oct-11-11  jmboutiere: Magnus Carlsen won the tournament with 1 1/2 - 1/2 ( two blitz games) against Ivanchuk. His new ELO rating is 2825.Respect and congrat.
Oct-12-11  Ulhumbrus: An alternative to 20...a4 is to play the black queen to the square b4 as in the game Rubinstein vs Nimzowitsch, 1907 by means of the manoeuvre ...Qe7-d6-b6-b4 eg 20...Qd6 21 h3 Qb6 22 Rd2 Qb4
