Funny, 9..Bd6 has only been around since 2008, <3 years after retirement> with only a handful of GM games, yet Kasparov bangs it out in blitz and has a dominant position out of the opening.

Oct-10-11  joeysilv: Wow this was total domination!
Oct-10-11  AnalyzeThis: And the reason for not playing the mainline was?

scormus: 8. Bd3, was this a Nige special? Maybe an imminent Qh5 was on his mind?
Oct-14-11  AnalyzeThis: Before or after the knight moves from f6?

Not at all. To play an opening line that gives black (Garry) so much play for the measly price of a pawn in a BLITZ game is a poor choice indeed. I would have played 4.d3 and taken the game into more favorable (and less explored) territory, In all likelihood the game would transpose into a d3 Italian game as we've seen in many of the recent events, and black would have been more contained.

Dec-10-18  DrGridlock: Great opening selection against great Gary.

If you're Nigel Short playing Gary Kasparov with a career rapid record of 10 wins, 46 losses and 36 draws, you're clearly not going to win a Ruy Lopez containing a deep theoretical novelty at move 25. The 8 Bd3 system of the Two Knights is very playable, and Komodo gives the white a positional advantage of .14 after 14 Ne4 (instead of Short's 14 h3).

This game is more illustrative of why Gary Kasparov is just a better chess player than Nigel Short (no disrespect intended to Nigel), and not bad opening play.
