Aug-28-11  Resignation Trap: I think White overlooked 24...Bb5 in his calculations. I'm sure Nisipeanu can play better than this. But a good start for Kasim!
Aug-28-11  Gregor Samsa Mendel: Maybe the position after white's 46th would make a good Monday or Tuesday puzzle.
Aug-28-11  SetNoEscapeOn: Tough pairing for both players.
Aug-28-11  positionalgenius: Kasimdhzanov is a dangerous KO player. I wouldn't be suprised if he makes it very far.
Aug-29-11  dahtah: he could go far if he will beat kamsky on the 2nd round.

HeMateMe: Rus K. hung onto that gambit pawn. He was always a pawn up.
Aug-30-11  Gregor Samsa Mendel: Gosh, that was fast.
Aug-30-11  Tired Tim: This was an accelerated time presumably
Aug-30-11  estrick: 45. Nd5 is the kind of mistake I'd expect from a 1200, . . . or me, when I'm playing badly. Surprising to see it played by a 2600.
Aug-30-11  sevenseaman: This would have been my third Tuesday in a row, had I missed it. So I admit to have been a bit superstitious and apprehensive.

The way it took me nearly a minute, the memories had almost started flooding back...<then I took the N...with the proper R>.

Aug-30-11  M.Hassan: "Easy" Balck to move 46...?
Black has a Rook for a Knight.
The doubled pawn of Black can bring him win:

46............Rxd5
47.exd5 f4+
48.Kf2 fxe3
49.Kxe3 Rxd5

Black obviously wins

Aug-30-11  M.Hassan: I should have mentioned:
46....Rcxd5
Aug-30-11  dzechiel: Black to move (46...?). Black is up an exchange. "Easy."

Black goes up a whole rook after

46...Rcxd5

Should white opt to play on and recapture with

47 exd5

then

47...f4+

should convince white that the end is near.

Time to check.

Aug-30-11  rhickma4: Somehow easier than yesterday.
46...R5xd5 47.exd5 f4+ leaves Black a whole rook up.
Aug-30-11  Once: <estrick> To be fair to white, after 45.... Rd4, it's hard to find a safe place to park the white knight.

46. Nd3 runs into a deadly pin with 46.... Rc3.

46. Rb3 Rb5! and again the pinned knight will be lost.

46. Na6 Ra5 - and the knight will eventually be cornered and lost.

The best that Fritz can find is the weird looking 46. Na2. But that cannot be a healthy square for a knight.

So, yes, I can see why 46. Nd5 might be played, especially if time is short. At first glance, it looks safe enough, as the pawn fork f4 is defended by two pieces - the knight and king. But 46...Rcxd5 kills the knight and moves the e pawn.

One move to remove two defenders at a stroke - now that's what I call efficiency.

Aug-30-11  morfishine: <46...R5xd5> 47.exd5 f4+ and black wins a rook.

Thats twice now that a pawn has dealt the lethal blow. Looks like a blue-collar week

Aug-30-11  agb2002: Black has a rook for a knight.

The pawn on f5 can fork the white king and rook but the white knight controls f4. Hence, 46... Rcxd5 (46... f4+ 47.Nxf4 but not 47.Kxf4 because of 47... Rcxd5):

A) 47.exd5 f4+ 48.Kf2 fxe3+ 49.Kxe3 Rxd5 - + [R].

B) 47.exf5 Rxf5 - + [R].

C) 47.Re1 fxe4 - + [R].

Aug-30-11  cocker: A neat finish, slightly different to usual Tuesday fare. And remarkably up to date.
Aug-30-11  whiteshark: I remembered this tactical trick, as the game has been played just 2 days ago.
Aug-30-11  Artsemthon: 46...Rcxd5 47.exd5 f4+.
Aug-30-11  KingV93: I felt this one was pretty easy, and it IS Tuesday after all. Thinking that the capture exchanges down to a rook ending and after ♙f6 the White ♔ is blocked off and Black can advance the pawns.

Happy to have gotten an endgame puzzle, in short order no less!

Aug-30-11  mohannagappan: 46. ...Rxd5 47.exd5 f4+ white loses a rook and obviously black"s advantage
Aug-30-11  Patriot: I had no problem with this one (all was quiet outside my office). 46...Rcxd5 (not 46...Rdxd5 47.exd5 f4+ 48.Kxf4) 47.exd5 f4+ 48.Kf2 fxe3+ 49.Kxe3 Rxd5 .
Aug-30-11  Patriot: <Once> I'm not seeing the winning sequence after 46.Na6 Ra5 47.Nb8 although 46.Na2 does look safer.

I agree that 46.Nd5 would be an easy mistake to make, especially in time trouble. It looks like a natural move.

Aug-30-11  TomOhio: I did it the other way around... pushing the pawn to check and winning the Knight as a result. The difference is I was left with a 2-1 Rook advantage rather then 1-0. Would rather have 1-0.
