Jul-17-11 | | Kinan: Aggressive opening, great switching in middle game and nice finish..well done Polgar. |

 | | HeMateMe: Nice to see this kind of game. |

 | | tamar: Warning to all World Chess Teams...JUDIT'S GOT A GUN!!! |
Jul-17-11 | | dangerhump: had a stretch of 6 out 8 moves with the king without being in check...don't see that happen much |
Jul-17-11 | | fisayo123: Getting your king to safety is what its called. Fairly common. Ganguly blundered with 59. Rf3 ?? |
Jul-17-11 | | twinlark: Absolutely absorbing game, with Ganguly being intimidated by Polgar's patient intent and probing. He actually defended quite effectively and his game was quite defensible until 59. Rf3?? which loses instantly to the pawn advance as the queen can't defend both the rook and against the pawn advance. Looks like a time control blunder, as Ganguly seems too intent on protecting b3. It's a pity as the game was starting to get really interesting at this point. Giving the old abacus a good rattle, it seems the best way of defending the vulnerable g2 point is 59. Rd2, giving up the Pb3 and Pb4 in exchange for Black's Pe5: click for larger viewIf 59...Qxb3 60. Qxe5 Qxc4 61. Rf2 draws.
If 59...d3 60. Qf2 (forced) Qc6 (60...Rxg2+ 61. Qxg2 Rxg2+ 62. Rxg2 looks drawish) 61. Rg4 Rxg4 62. hxg4 e4 63. Qf8 Rg6: click for larger viewand White has to do everything right to survive. This is a really tough endgame! The only alternative to 61. Rg4 seems to be 61. g4:

Jul-17-11 | | Clodhopper: Wow. In the Sicilian, which side is black supposed to attack on? All sides!!! |
Jul-17-11 | | Bobsterman3000: I wish I could play the Taimanov like this, my pieces always end up getting cramped up against strong, aggressive competition. Polgar's knight on C6 looked backwards but it sure had a strong influence on her successful defense... |
Jul-18-11 | | andrewjsacks: Judit at her best, and very nice to see. |
Jul-18-11 | | IRONCASTLEVINAY: GOTD in one day? |
Jul-18-11 | | sevenseaman: Judith has a wonderful multidimensional position. Surya cannot think of an immediate resource. Advance of the 'd' pawn escalates the problem. The Q cannot move away because Black Q will pick away the f3 R with impunity. |
Jul-18-11 | | superparrot: Yet another reason why Polgar is one of my favorite players. |
Jul-18-11 | | GlennOliver: I don't currently have any electronic aids with which to work through the analysis, but 59. Rg4
seems to have good chances for the draw.
Your thoughts? |
Jul-18-11 | | ColeTrane: a gangly attack on ganguly . . . now we've made fun of her first and last name |
Jul-18-11 | | ColeTrane: but seriously, this is a Black Lion defense. |
Jul-18-11 | | I play the Fred: <now we've made fun of her first and last name> <His> first and last name. |
Jul-18-11 | | Elrathia Kingi: <GlennOliver> After 59.Rg4, Rxg4 60.hxg4 e4 61.Rh3, black has a powerful pair of passed pawns. Something like ...Qc6 21.Rh4 e3, and black has a nice advantage. Trading queens will almost certainly result in a black win, and the doubled pawns on g will easily fall. |

Jul-18-11 | | SimonWebbsTiger: @coltrane
we haven't said: Judit put a squeeze on Ganguly's bits. |
Jul-18-11 | | marwanredman123: Masterpiece by wonderful Polgar |
Jul-18-11 | | GlennOliver: Thanks for the analysis, EK.
I'll look forward to playing your line through in a few days time. |

Jul-18-11 | | kevin86: With all of the rook and queen acxtion-it took a pawn to decide it... |
