Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-29-11  DrMAL: Black's setup after the opening is distinctly passive. After 18...Rc8 play in the center with 19.Bb5 was best (e.g., 19...h6 20.Bxf6 and either 20...Nxf6 21.d5 or 20...Bxf6 21.e5).

21.Bf1 seems to embark on a slow kingside advance but then attention turns to the center on both sides. 25...Nfd7 and 27...Bf8 are again passive, giving white an advantage again where 28.d5 was clearly best.

Anish seems to start finally moving with 34.Qe4 a nice move in a complicated position. Then black suddenly lashes out with 34.g5 an obvious mistake. White's position is more active than black's, and starting a conflict particularly by weakening one's king is simply a bad idea here.

Black tried hard but after 40...Nde3 41.Nf3 the forced move 41...Ree8 was missed (42.Bxe3 Nxe3 43.Re1 Qh7 44.Qxh7+ Kxh7 45.Ng5+ Kh6 46.Bxc6 Re7 and black is still barely alive). 41...c5 was a blunder and Anish showed why very well!
