Jan-31-11  KingG: How come this is Andersson's only game of the tournament? Has he dropped out again?

Phony Benoni: Likely a misidentification. There are a number of players in the tournament with a surname resembling "Andersson".
Feb-02-11  shalgo: It was Ulf.

Look at the complete tournament table: it shows Ulf Andersson playing this game in round one and then dropping out of the tournament:

HeMateMe: ...wuz looking at the database. Karpov, the best player of Ulf's generation, beat Ulf 13-1 in classical chess, 28 draws.

I was a little surprised by that. I thought Andersson, regarded as a drawing master, would have fewer losses against Karpov. about 1/3 games are victories for Karpov, the rest drawn. Maybe thats just an indication of how badly Karpov outclassed the field, in his prime.

Feb-02-11  M.D. Wilson: Karpov, as World Champion, dominated the chess world like no one else before him.

perfidious: <HeHateMe> Andersson's lone win over Karpov, at Milan 1975, was a nice one, though.

In the above game, Black, a player of solid style himself, is outclassed in this middlegame with opposite bishops, where White's superior activity carries the day.

Feb-03-11  M.D. Wilson: Andersson had a very natural, strong endgame, but it was less dynamic than that of Karpov's and Korchnoi's. For Andersson, chess was certainly not a sport, for he embraced the artistic element as an end in itself.
Feb-04-11  KingG: This isn't the first time Ulf Andersson has dropped out of a tournament early. From what I understand he has a terrible fear of losing games, which is perhaps related to these drop outs. Does anyone have any details on this? Does he actually have a serious nervous/mental problem, or was it some physical ailment that forced him to leave early?
Feb-25-11  ReikiMaster: 28...Re8 looks ok. One unnecessary weakening made all the difference.
