Domdaniel: The steady drip-drip of pawns falling, the jangle and scrape of pieces forced onto bad squares, the hope of counterplay squashed like a bug, and a brutally exquisite finish: if 36.Kxg3 then ...Qg5+ is mate in three.

Ivanchuk, magisterial.

Feb-05-11  splatty: Ivanchuk was on such killer form in this tournament it's amazing to see.
Feb-05-11  goodevans: <29 Qe1> sacs a pawn in the hope of some counterplay. Black "wastes" a tempo taking the pawn and opens up the a1-h8 diagonal for a later Qa1+. An interesting idea that came to nothing as the K was quite safe on h6.

<15 Qd1> though - what was that all about? Not only dropping a pawn but also wasting a tempo since with <17 Qd3> white puts his Q where it should have gone two moves earlier.

Chucky was certainly in inspired form this tournament, but it helps if your first round opponent throws away material for no apparent reason.

Domdaniel: <goodevans> Yeah, 15.Qd3 would be much more sensible. Maybe then 15...Qe6 16.b3, and perhaps Black should simply retreat with 16...Raa8.

16...Ra3 and 16...Ra5 look tempting, but either one gives White a chance to redeploy his Bishop, pulling it back to c1 or d2 to attack the black rook, then switching to the long diagonal.

I'd still prefer Black - he has play on the open files, has kept his kingside intact, and can put pressure on White's e-pawn.

Maybe White gambled on giving up a pawn to play Bxf6 and force ...gxf6. But I think this only works when White has positional control of the game. Here it just gave Ivanchuk a pawn *and* the use of the g-file for attacking purposes.

And yet Mullon, rated 2400+, would dispose of a 2200 player with similar ease. And they in turn would demolish a 2000, who isn't exactly *weak*.

I've watched Ivanchuk's analysis of his last-round game with Fridman four times already. The amount he sees is mind-boggling.

Feb-07-11  parmetd: can you post a link to that analysis of the Fridman game?
