Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-01-10  gauer: Michael recently won the Ontario 2010 Closed in a topical Scandinavian, attempting to improve on a previous test in M Kleinman vs A Martchenko, 2009 0-1.

The computer club had Hiarcs 10, & a first check with Deep Position Analysis, ply-9 (~30 min run-time) of 15 ... ♗xc3 resulted. Raising the depth a bit (with check-box of seeking for white) at 14-ply (2.5 hours later - during the club night play) returned the following:

16. d6+ (16. cxb6 Bf6 17. d6+ Kg7 18. bxc7 Qd7 $11 0.03/9) (16. bxc3 Nbxd5 17. c4 (17. Bxg5 c6 18. c4 Qa5 $17 -1.04/9) (17. gxf5 b5 18. Bxb5 (18. f6 Rxf6 $19 -1.90/9) (18. fxg6 c6 $19 -1.78/14) (18. cxb6 axb6 $19 -1.52/14) 18... Rb8 $17 -1.27/9) 17... c6 (17... f4 18. cxd5 fxe3 $11 -0.02/9) 18. gxf5 (18. cxd5 Nxd5 $15 -0.57/14) 18... Bxf5 $15 -0.26/14) 16... Ned5 17. dxc7 (17. cxb6 c6 18. bxc3 (18. Rxd5 Bxb2+ $17 -1.09/9) (18. d7 Bxd7 $15 -0.57/14) 18... axb6 $15 -0.26/9) (17. bxc3 Be6 18. gxf5 (18. cxb6 axb6 $11 -0.20/9) 18... Rxf5 $11 -0.20/9) 17... Bxb2+ (17... Qf6 18. cxb6 Bxb2+ $15 -0.38/9) 18. Kxb2 etc is back to game. No check yet to see what Rybka, Fritz etc thought...

The pair of them spent maybe an hour trying to decide how much the continuation of 14 0-0-0, etc improves in their post-mortem, & Mr. Kleinman finished at 5 points in 6 played (receiving a 1st round 1/2 point bye) out of the 7 scheduled rounds.
