Nov-24-11  outplayer: why 7...Nc6 is not in the ECO-C encyclopedia? it seems it is not the choice of a GM.

Domdaniel: <outplayer> 7...Nc6 may not be a bad move, but it is unusual. In most French lines, Black aims to play ...c5 in order to undermine the White centre. Playing ...Nc6 makes this more difficult. Of course, there are playable lines such as the Guimard Variation (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nc6), where Black aims for tactical ideas with ...Nc6. But on move 7, as here, it is perhaps better to keep the advance of Black's c-pawn in reserve.

kingfu: Thank you again. Have you checked out So-Akobian at the US? It was sort of a French. He played the Rubinstein! and got dismembered in 24 moves.

kingfu: Could this be Don Van Vliet's Great Grandfather?

Domdaniel: <kingfu> That thought has occurred to me too -- the Captain's Grandpa... that might be Admiral Beefheart ... ?
