Feb-19-19  jith1207: Rather than h5, I'd have played

25. Bxb5+ Naxb5#

Feb-19-19  jith1207: <agb>'s second line is pretty.
Feb-19-19  et1: Thanks for showing that Nc2 also works
Feb-19-19  malt: Me has 24...N:c2+ 25.Kb1

(25.B:c2 Nc3+ wins )
(25.Q:c2 Nc3+ wins )
25...Nc3+ 26.K:c2
(26.bc3 Qa2# )
26...Bb3+! 27.Kd2
(27.K:b3 Qa4# )
27...Nb1#
<ChessHigherCat: Pretty tricky for a 2's day> Yes

Feb-19-19  Cheapo by the Dozen: Fun one.

24 ... Nc3 threatens discovered check and mate.

White can't defend by attacking Black's queen, because the discovered check can actually be double.

White can't defend with Bxb5+, because the a3 knight can give discovered mate by recapturing on that square.

Defending by trying to use the tempo to set up an interposition fails as well.

Feb-19-19  Jambow: I don't it's like a Tuesday puzzle at best!
Feb-19-19  sudoplatov: I got the same mate as Malt.
Feb-19-19  patzer2: For today's Tuesday (24...?) puzzle, I calculated 24...Nc3 25. bxc3 (25. bxa3 Bxa3 -+) 25..Nxc2+ 26. Kb2 (26. Kb1 Qa2#) 26...Qa2#.

White's game goes bad with 19. Nf3? d4 ∓ (-0.92 @ 29 ply, Stockfish 10) which opens up the King to attack due to the errant Knight being out of play.

Instead, 19. Nb3 ⩲ (+0.54 @ 27 ply, Stockfish 10) makes both Knights available for White's defense. With the King secure after 19. Nb3, White has good chances for a successful attack against Black's Kingside (e.g. 19. Nb3 0-0 20. Rh1 ± (+1.36 @ 27 ply, Stockfish 10).

White's game goes from bad to worse after 20. Nh2?? Be6 -+ (-4.69 @ 23 ply, Stockfish 10).

Instead, attempting to get the Knight back in play with 20. Nd2 0-0 21. Nb3 Na4 22. f4 exf4 ∓ (-1.41 @ 25 ply, Stockfish 10) might have improved White's drawing chances.

Feb-19-19  Walter Glattke: White is a rook ahead, 24.-Nc3 A) 25.bxc3 Nxc2++ 26.Kb1/Kb2 Qa2# B) 24.-Nc3 25.bxa3Bxa3 26.Nc6 Bb2++ 27.Kxb2 Qa2# C) 25.Qd2 Nxc2++#
Feb-19-19  drollere: Nxc2+ prpares Nxc3+ and mate next. if Kb1 then Na3+ bxa3 Nc3+ wins the Q.
Feb-19-19  TeaChess: 24. ... Nc2+ is a forcing move and mates faster.
Feb-19-19  mel gibson: Stockfish tells us that there are 2 possible methods for mate - either Black Knight can do it.

24.... Nc3

(24. .. Nxc2+

(♘a3xc2+
♔a1-b1 ♘a4-c3+ ♔b1xc2 ♗e6-b3+ ♔c2xb3 ♕a5-a4+) +M4/86 18) Mate in 4.

24....Nc3 25. h5 (25. bxa3 (b2xa3
♗e7xa3 ♗d3xb5+ ♔e8-f8 ♘b8-d7+ ♗e6xd7 ♗b5-a4 ♕a5xa4 ♕e2-c4 ♗a3-b4+ ♗c1-a3 ♕a4xa3+ ♕c4-a2 ♕a3xa2+) -M7/61 16)

mate in 7.

Feb-19-19  morfishine: After <24...Nc3> White's numb reply <25.h5> had "Well, I'm toast" written all over it
Feb-19-19  zb2cr: I went for 24. ... Nxc2+.
Feb-19-19  Damenlaeuferbauer: My solution is 24.-,Nxc2+! 25.Kb1 (25.Bxc2/Qxc2,Nc3+ 26.Ba4/Qa4,Qxa4#) 25.-,Nc3+ 26.Kxc2 (26.bxc3,Da2#) 26.-,Bb3+ 27.Kd2 (27.Kxb3,Qa4#) 27.-,Nxe4# A very nice and forced mate in 4 moves and a typical Fischer-Sozin Sicilian from the black side of the board. The end reminds me a little of the famous game R.J. Fischer vs. E.P. Geller, Skopje 1967 (R.J Fischer, My 60 Memorable Games, game 58).

gawain: 24...Nxc2+ is the more efficient and much prettier move, forcing mate in at most 3 moves. After the game continuation 24...Nc3 White can prolong the game for seven moves. This is not elegant.
Feb-19-19  erichbf: I am with those that liked Nc2+, as it is more forcing. The mate with Ne4 is pretty.
Feb-19-19  Carlos0012358: 25.h5, another suicidal move designed to accelerate an already assured death. Seems to be a daily theme.
Feb-19-19  Walter Glattke: 25.h5 Nab1# possible

Breunor: I thought Nc3 was screaming to be played. Took a while to work out bxa3 but natural moves lead to mate.
Feb-19-19  Nullifidian: Unless I'm hallucinating, there's a better move than 24... ♘c3.

24... ♘xc2+
25. ♔b1

(if ♕xc2 or ♗xc2, then ♘c3+ and ♕xa4#)

25... ♘c3+
26. ♔xc2

(if ♙bxc3, then ♕a2#)

26... ♗b3+!

And now 27. ♔b3 ♕a4# or ♔d2 and any knight move other than ♘xe2+?? mates.

Feb-19-19  lost in space: I also had 24...Nxc2 as starting point
Feb-20-19  jith1207: I guess <Chris Owen> has had a lot of valium intake.
Feb-20-19  TheBish: <jith1207: agb's second line is pretty.>

Interestingly, in that line, any knight move <other> than taking the queen is mate.
