Feb-14-14
 | | FSR: Chess is a hard game. The Exchange French is not exactly considered a forced win for White. Where did Black go wrong? I fed the game into Houdini 3 to see what it "thought." Of course the symmetrical 7...h6 would have been equal. But Ivanchuk's 7...Re8 must also be OK. After 8.Bg5, it gives 8...h6 9.Bh4 Be6 10.Nc3 Nbd7=, among other equalizing lines. Houdini already doesn't like 12...Bd7 and says that White would have had a serious advantage (+0.44) after 13.Ne5. Instead, it suggests (a) 12...Nf4 13.Nbd2 (we humans don't like doubled pawns, but it says that 13.Rxe8 Rxe8 14.Bxf6 gxf6 15.Nbd2 Qf8 is equal) Be6 14.Ne5 Nxd3 15.Qxd3 c5 16.dxc5 Bxc5 17.Nb3 Bd6 18.Rad1 g5 19.Bg3 Qb6= or (b) 12...g5 13.Bg3 Bxg3 14.fxg3 c5 15.Nbd2 Qb6=. On move 17, Houdini greatly prefers 17...Nd7! 18.Bxe7 (18.Bg3 Nxe5 19.Bxe5 Rc8 20.Rael Qd7 21.Nf1 Bf5=) Nxe5 19.Rxe5 Qxe7 20.Rad1 Qd7 21.Nf1 f6 22.R5e3 Bf7 23.Rxe8+ Rxe8 24.Rxe8+ Bxe8 25.Ne3 c6=. On move 20, it likes rerouting the knight with 20...Nf6 21.Qd3 Nd7 with only a minute (+0.21) advantage to White. And for some reason it really hates 21...f6, giving White a large advantage (+0.71) after 22.Nd3. It says that White would have been winning after 23.Ne3!, and that 23.Ng3 was a little weaker, allowing 23...Rxe2, although White would still have had a large advantage. I wish I understood all of this, but it seems that Black should have exchanged one of White's knights. This contradicts what I thought I learned from Hans Kmoch 's <Pawn Power in Chess>: that if you have a bad bishop, its "badness" is lessened if you keep one of your knights on the board. |

|
Feb-14-14 | | hedgeh0g: <FSR> Or just play 9...c6, ...Qc7, ...h6, etc. Doesn't look like much for White. |

Feb-14-14 | | Shams: <Absentee> Agree. Love the pun. |

 | | FSR: <hedgeh0g: <FSR> Or just play 9...c6, ...Qc7, ...h6, etc. Doesn't look like much for White.> That is also fine. And once Black gets in ...h6 and ...Qc7, if White's bishop has retreated to h4, White has to worry about ...g5 winning a pawn. |
|
Feb-14-14 | | ndg2: In the exchange French, positions that are too symmetrical are still slightly advantagous for white. I prefer the Bd6, Nc6, Ne7 setup.
Don't assume, the exchange French is automatically draw or white must be always a patzer! |

Feb-14-14 | | morfishine: Ivanchuk plays speed chess? |

Feb-14-14 | | FairyPromotion: Awesome pun indeed! Literally made me laugh out loud. The fact that it's Valentine's day, makes it that much funnier. Kudos to whoever came up with it! :) |

And once Black gets in ...h6 and ...Qc7, if White's bishop has retreated to h4, White has to worry about ...g5 winning a pawn.> Yeah, that's the idea. Without it, Black will struggle somewhat with the development of his queenside. I briefly considered the possibility that White might try a pawn sacrifice to open the f-file, but besides the immediate ...Qxg3, Black would also have ...Nh5!, with a good game. Great pun and a lovely finish, by the way. |

 | | FSR: Hilarious mate, albeit not for Ivanchuk, I suppose. It is reminiscent of a way that one can theoretically mate in king and two knights versus king: click for larger view It never actually happens. Even in two knights versus pawn endings where the knights win, the king always gets mated in a corner. Endgame Explorer: NN vs P |

Feb-14-14 | | goodevans: An excellent pun and a new entry for my <find the worst move> collection to boot. What could be better? |

Feb-14-14 | | mucher1: I remember the song, but am not sure I really understand the pun!? Perhaps I'm just not hip to the most current lingo... |

 | | OhioChessFan: I can't decide if it's a great pun or too forced to be good at all. |
|
Feb-14-14 | | paavoh: Took a while to realize that the unusual hyphenation "Vlad-is-lav" rhymes with "what is love". Best pun so far this year! Would the "guilty" person please report him/herself? |
