Jan-28-11  Sem: A beautiful queen sac. KxQ; Ra4+ Kb1; Ra1+ and mate.
Sep-07-11  DrMAL: Fun game between two truly distinguished members of this site. White was very young and not yet an IM it was "before his day." Tempo was critical where 14.g4 and 17.Nb3 both slowed white's pace. 19...Bxg4?! helped white but 21.Qd5! was missed. And after 21...Nxc3? winning move 22.bxc3! was not chosen then 23.hxg4? blundered (23.Rcf1!), but it was still a terrific blitz game. Ray saw the mate with 25...Qxa2! great tactical eye!
Sep-07-11  SimonWebbsTiger: @<DrMal>

I think Ray was quite a young lad too!

Sep-07-11  DrMAL: <SWT> Wow, you're right. For some reason, I did not look up his age then, thinking he was maybe ten years older. He was not an IM yet either, prodigies they both were. Keene's career in particular was tremendously outstanding, as you know. I sometimes take exception to certain comments he makes (e.g., in Kasparov vs Portisch, 1983) but maybe I took it wrongly. I think he is one of the most admirable chess players on this large site.
Sep-07-11  SimonWebbsTiger: Ray has done more than a lot for British chess; he should be given a medal. Actually, I joke -- he has: the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Elizabeth II for services to chess!

I have seen Ray in action, when he gave a simul back in the late 80s, upon the relaunch of <Chess> magazine as <Pergamon Chess>. Even though he had basically stopped his career as an active GM, I seem to remember him pretty much demolishing the players. Never had the pleasure of meeting Day, though.

Sep-07-11  BobCrisp: <I think he is one of the most admirable chess players on this large site.>

And vice versa.

IMlday: Things I remember from speed chess at that world junior: that Robert Huebner was way better than anyone else; that we played outdoors by the pool but in the shade; a europe vs western hemisphere team match of Keene and Huebner vs Day and Julio Kaplan was split 1-1. If I was playing a Yugoslav Attack open Sicilian in this game, it was likely to find out how the English players were defending it. Theory, such as it was at the time, considered the Dragon doubtful. In the game White wins with 22.bxc3 of course, but probably there was no time for reflection.
