Apr-12-09		njchess: The hard part of this puzzle was determining that control of the f-file, in particular f5, was necessary for White to win. Given that the f-file is Black's only means of escape from check, it wasn't too difficult. Sacrificing the rook could only be justified after determining that the queen could be forced away from the 5th rank (i.e. 23. b4 was found). Great play by White. It took me about 6 minutes to find the game sequence, which is forced. Great play from White.

My first idea was to remove the black queen from the defense of the knight but after 21.c3 b4 (21... hxg4 22.b4 Rxh2+ 23.Bxh2) 22.a3 b3 White didn't make much progress. Another idea is to open the black king position with 21.Rxf7 (threatening 22.Rxe7+ and avoiding 21... 0-0 22.Qxe7 hxg4): A) 21... Kxf7 22.Qe6+ A.1) 22... Ke8 23.Qg6+ Kf8 24.Rf1+ A.1.a) 24... Apr-12-09		CHESSTTCAMPS: White has a big initiative for his pawn deficit, with all pieces active on good squares, and the majors lined up on open / semi-open files directed at black's uncastled king. Significant problems for black include the immobile bishop, the pinned knight, and the queen that is tied to the defense of the knight, preventing mate. One has to think that white should win quickly with accurate play. I was quickly attracted to the idea of 21.b4! with the idea of gaining a tempo on the diverted black queen in order to reinforce the attack on the e-file, i.e. 21.b4! Qxb4 22.Rf4(?) Qc5 23.Re4 However, after O-O (forced) 24.Rxe7 hxg4 25.Qxg4, Rg5 or Bc8 looks safe for black and he remains a pawn up. So, a more forcing continuation is called for: 21.b4! Qxb4 22.Rxf7! Kxf7 (hxg4? 23.Rxe7+ mates in two) 23.Qe6+ and now A. 23... Kf8 24.Rf1+ Nf5 (...Ke8 25.Qf7#) 25.Rxf5+ Rxf5 26.Qxf5+ Kg8 (Ke8 27.Qd7+ Kf8 28.Bd6+ wins quickly) 27.Qe6+ Kh7 (Kf8 28.Bd6+) 28.Bf5+ g6 29.Qxg6# A.1 24... Rf5 24.Bxf5 (not Rxf5+?? B. 23...Ke8 24.Qg6+ Kf8 25.Rf1+ Rf5 26.Rxf5+ At this juncture it is important to point out the reason for white's 21.b4! - with the Q still on c5, black could now force an exchange of queens with 26...Qxf5. 26...Kg8 (Nxf5 27.Qxf5+ transposes to A.) 27.Qe6+ Kh7 28.Rxh5# B.1. 25...Nf5 26.Rxf5+ Kg8 (Rxf5 27.Qxf5+ transposes to A, while 26...Ke7 27.Qf7#) 27.Qe8+ Kh7 28.Rxh5+ Rxh5 29.Qxh5+ Kg8 30.Be6+ Kf8 31.Qf7# Very pretty, but less complex than the tactics from the last two puzzles. There are some traps for white - I nearly missed the possibility of Qb1+ in the A.1 line.

It seems like black gets a piece and a rook for the queen, but the threats in the "e" file will force him to surrender some material. 24. Bd6 Qe5 25. Bxe5 Bc8 26. Qd6 Rh6 27. Bf6! Renewing the threats in the "e" file. Now black must give up an exchange. 27. ... Rf1+ The only move. 28. Rxf1 Rxf6 Capturing with the pawn would let white renew his threats, so black forces the exchange of rooks. 29. Rxf6 gxf6 30. Qxf6 And, of course, this is a won endgame for white. But it requires some technique to not allow black to coordinate his bishop and knight.
