 | | Richard Taylor: <Ychromosome> That is basically correct - and it is why Steadman resigned. Earlier it is little less clear. In this game I made or offered 6 sacrifices - first the pawn on e6, then offered a exchange (not accepted by MS), then the knight on d6 then the B on g6, then the R on f5! Mike actually saw my e6 sac and Nd6+ (he knew d5 wasn't the best) but decided to go in for it as most of his games in the tournament had been rather dull and he thought he would see if he could "weather the storm"...and so he went for it as the tournament wasn't rated... But it was an interesting game. |

Jan-21-09 | | Towershield: 22...Raf8 saves black I think; 23.Rxf8 Rxf8 24.Re1+ Ne5 25.Qxf8 d3+ 26.Kh1 dxc2 27.Qe8+ Kf5!. Better was 22.Rae1+ Ne5 23.Rxe5+ dxe5 24.Qg6+ winning the queen and the game. |

Jan-22-09 | | Ychromosome: Thanks a million Mr. Taylor! I just got back from a road trip and found all this great analysis from the man himself. Ahhh... I love chessgames.com. |
|
Jan-23-09
 | | Richard Taylor: <Towershield> We analysed 22..Raf8 after the game ... I forget what we came up with but your var looks good. I saw the other line you mentioned during the game - in fact 22. Rae1+ was my original idea. Now I agree it probably does win but during the game I didn't have that much - I spent too much time on 10 e6 and 11 Ng5 which are really pretty obviously the best I think ... just didn't want to make fool of myself against a 2200 + player! After 25. Qxb6 he has Nd6 and I wasn't certain the material balance was enough in my favour. |
|
Jan-23-09
 | | Richard Taylor: <Towershield> Using my Fritz (for the first time on this game) - a similar var as you proposed is - 21. f5+ Nxf5 22. Rxf5
22. ... d3+ 23. Kh1 Raf8 24. Rxf8 Rxf8 25. Re1+ Ne5 26. Qxf8 Kd7 27. cxd3 Qd4 28. Rc1 Bc6 29. Qg7+ Kd8 30. Rf1 Qxd3 31. Rf8+ Be8 32. h3 Qd1+ 33. Kh2 Qh5
and Back has the advantage
But in an actual game there are many ways for black to go wrong - there was no way I wasn't going to go in for 17 Nxd6+ I play many sacrifices in my games - seem sound others unclear but I have a lot of exciting games! I have made quite a number of Q sacs - some are not "true sacs" being forcing but others are... I also actually miscalculated thinking that after 21. f5+ I had a forced mate in 22. Re1+ Ne3 23. Qf7+ Ke5 24. Qf5# The mid stream I saw 22. ... Ne5! -mentally noted the win of the Q but diced with 22. Rxf5 !? such is the chess struggle! |

 | | Richard Taylor: <Ychromosome: Thanks a million Mr. Taylor! I just got back from a road trip and found all this great analysis from the man himself. Ahhh... I love chessgames.com.> Thank you for taking an interest - this line may have been unsound but it was great to play in practice!! Exciting! Sadly the game wasn't rated so I didn't get my IM norm!! The last game - in the 80s I played v Mike was him playing a Dutch to my 1. d4 and I got strong (more conventional) attack, but he wriggled out and "monstored me" with the time pressure I was in! It was at the same Club too! Mike could well have been NZ Champion and he was the North Island Champion...and is currently doing very well at the Queenstown Classic in the South Island organised by GM Murray Chandler. |

 | | Richard Taylor: 22. Rae1+ was almost certainly winning. And I saw it - but I chose the risky road!! The road taken: as against Frost's "The road not taken..." ! |
|
Jan-23-09 | | Towershield: Yes after 22.Rae1+ Ne5 23.Rxe5+ dxe5 24.Qg6+ Ke7 25.Qxb6 black can indeed play Nd6. But after 26.Qc7+ Ke6 27.Qg7 white wins- this is the point. Still a very nice game of course. |

Jan-23-09 | | euripides: <richard> A really lovely game. Bravo ! |
|
Jan-24-09
 | | Richard Taylor: <euripides> thanks! Fritz wasn't so enthusiastic - but there was only really one defence... for a Club game it was combative! |
|
Feb-02-09 | | gus inn: A most beautiful game <Richard> ! Kudos . |

7...c5 is the best move. |

Cheers...o.k errors were made - but such is chess!! |

 | | Benzol: It's a great game by you Richard and one I think you can be justly proud of. Mike Steadman is an FM and no push over. |
|
Jul-11-09 | | whiskeyrebel: Hey, all your pieces were invited to the party as they say. Good job. |
|
Jul-19-09
 | | Richard Taylor: <Benzol> <whiskeyrebel> thanks for or interest - it's not often someone of my rating gets to play an interesting combo - of course if I had a match with Mike he would win easily. BTW last time we played in about 1983 or so at ACC I nearly beat his Dutch but he counter-attacked and proceeded to 'monster' me! (That is I was low on time and went wrong..) But then I stopped chess few years later...Mike has kept playing and is indeed no pushover. But what about these guys who are GMs at 13 or 14? Depressing isn't it!!! Such is life, or chess. |
|
Oct-14-09 | | parisattack: Very nice King Hunt! Fast through the center is probably the best against the Tiger variation although I think 10. ...fe: the wrong move. I would be very proud to play such a game against a master! |
|
Oct-21-09
 | | Richard Taylor: <paisattack> Thank you. Mike isn't a master (yet!) but an FM - he is trying to get his IM norm - hard to get in NZ or Australia as rating levels are relatively lower than the US or Europe etc of course. I have been or have played Mike since about 1984 or so. But he is certainly a much stronger player - so far! Yes we both (or Steadman did especially as he uses this opening a lot) knew at the time that 10. ... Nf8 or 10. ... Nf6 was better. I think white is a bit better then, but it is quite complex. |

Nov-20-14 | | MarkFinan: The old poisoned rook routine, lol.
click for larger viewI really like this game! Lots of sacs and tactics, and to get so far down in material and still win makes a great game IMO. So many odd looking moves from both sides, left me scratching my head! Nice game though. ✌ |

Apr-11-15
 | | Richard Taylor: <MarkFinan: The old poisoned rook routine, lol.> Thanks. The game I liked as it was more intuitive than calculated so 16. Qg5 was an intuitive sacrifice. I wasn't going to wait though I wanted to keep Black's K in the centre. I still don't know how 'sound' any of it was as if I used a computer on it it was an old version of Fritz. I have a better engine now but I still haven't subjected it to analysis with that 'engine'. I think some things are good to just accept as those great moments, perhaps not to be repeated. The very next game I played (the very next day in fact as at the time I was in 2 chess clubs): was a bad game and I was checkmated ignominiously by one Stanley Yee (he played well with a good attack, and I played lazily or something)... So that is how it goes! |
