perfidious: This game is an interesting example of Black's attacking motif with ....c5 dxc5 ....b6 and the play arising therefrom; this activity persisted even into the ending.

  tamar: Another tablebase endgame lesson.

Neverov played 61...g3 which should have thrown away the win. 61...Rf2+ abandoning the pawn on g4 would have won.

White played correctly until 69...e3 where he had to find an only move to draw.

Can you find it?

Jan-07-08  crwynn: The move isn't very hard to find, but I missed the key line: 70.Ra8 Rc1 71.Kf3 Rf1+ 72.Ke4!; I saw only 72.Kg2? which loses at once to 72...e2. 71.Ra2 Rc2 72.Ra1 draws also, but I think 71.Kf3 is easier. Anything but 70...Rc1 looks a fairly easy draw.

Tamar,
The drawing move was 70. ♖a8, intending to check from the side, eg: 70...♖c1 71. ♖a2+ and now:
71...♔d1 72. ♔f3=
71...♔d3 72. ♖a3+ ♖c3 73. ♖a1=
71...♖c2 72. ♖a1 ♔e2 73. ♔g2=

  tamar: That looks correct.

Does that mean the same position one file over is a win for White?

tamar: Sorry, what I meant to say was, does this imply that there is no saving move if the pieces are one file over toward the a file?
