Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-24-07  Marmot PFL: 67.Kf3 draws, ex. Rf1+ 68.Ke4 g2 69.Rh8+ Kg3 70.Rg8+ Kf2 71.Kd4 Rb1 72.Rf8+. White's last 2 moves were the only non-losing moves, so the draw is much harder than I thought at first. For instance 71.Kd5 loses to Rb1 and Kc4 Kf3, or Rf8+ Ke3 and both times the black king is too close.
Nov-24-07  Eyal: 67.Kd3 is also a draw: 67...g2 68.Rh8+ Kg3 69.Rg8+ Kh2 70.Kc4. I wonder if Zhao was playing for a win at the stage of the game when he was putting his pair of rooks on the 7th, because White has several opportunities to force a draw - e.g. 38.Ncd3 Rxd4 39.Rc1 Re6 40.Rxg7+ Kxg7 41.Rc7+ Kh6 42.Nf7+ with perpetual. Anyway, a great fighting game and an interesting clash between a bishop pair and a knight pair.
Nov-24-07  rogge: Zhao spent a lot of time after move 40, probably looking for a win. He ended in zeitnot, with mistakes to follow.
Nov-25-07  Giearth: What about 45.♖g6? Will that help White?
Nov-26-07  sanyas: I'm sure White had a fairly superior position at one point. What happened?
Nov-30-07  Where is my mind: I think Zhao's 45th move was OK.Maybe on move 46 he could have moved his king out of the way. <fairly superior position at one point> I couldn't find it. It looked more like a close game.
Dec-05-07  sanyas: It's funny. After 29 moves, White has maximised the effectiveness of his pieces, but then runs out of things to do, and the Rooks crash through.
Dec-05-07  sanyas: Perhaps someone with a better positional sense can explain the phenomenon to me.
