Sep-21-07  Ulhumbrus: In the game Kramnik vs Anand, 2007 Anand played 10...Ra7 and lost. Kramnik played however 11 Rfc1 whereas Gelfand has played 11 Rd1, putting less pressure on the backward c7 pawn. This may be worth looking at further.
Sep-21-07  chessic eric: i suppose it also prevent a white R@c1
Sep-21-07  outplayer: 18...Ba3 threatens 19...b4
Sep-21-07  popski: <chessic eric: whoa! 18...Ba3 looks strange, but it does prevent a4.> Also preparing b4...
Sep-21-07  chessic eric: <outplayer> what of 19.Nc6 to prevent ...b4 with 20.Bb4 to follow? I don't think ...Rc8 helps much against it, either.
Sep-21-07  outplayer: I think the best game of this second half first round is Svidler vs Kramnik
Sep-21-07  outplayer: 19.Nc6 Qb7
Sep-21-07  chessic eric: if 19.Nc6 i don't think there is much to the pin 19...Qb7, but i've been wrong before.
Sep-21-07  benjinathan: <themofro> Gelfand :47 Anand 1:31.
Sep-21-07  chessic eric: on second thought i suppose 19.Bc7 achieves the a5 bishop's reintroduction.

  Eggman: By the way, Svidler-Kramnik features 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.Nc3, a variation which someone, I think on Kibitzer's Cafe, was asking about just the other day.
Sep-21-07  notyetagm: Go Anand!
Sep-21-07  dalbertz: <chessic eric: if 19.Nc6 i don't think there is much to the pin 19...Qb7, but i've been wrong before.>

Wouldn't following up with Rc8 add some teeth to the pin?

Sep-21-07  seaotter: For XMAS, Uncle Anand Santa to give me the c-file, then I want the long diagonal from b7-g2 and then the squares d5 and e4 I want to control with my two horsies, and then,... I want Mr. Gelfand to panic and try some kind of Petrosian exchange sacrifice to save himself, but then I am going to just take his extra wood and start a fire on the Qside.

thank you Uncle Anand

Sep-21-07  boz: If 19.Bc7 Qb7+ followed by Rfc8.
Sep-21-07  chessic eric: <dalbertz> sure, but there are resources like Nb-d4 and Rd6 in white's position - i didn't look too deep, it just looked exciting. But it's unnecessarily risky of course.
Sep-21-07  chessic eric: <boz> 19...Qb7+ 20.Qc6
Sep-21-07  popski: Poor Gelfand, nothing from opening preparation, time pressure and Anand on the other side...
Sep-21-07  seaotter: Here's an interesting idea for Svidler,... he takes his Knight to f1 and then to g3,... and Mr. K' is going to have to bring his Q back in a hurry to help shore up the dark square weaknesses in his King side.
Sep-21-07  SCUBA diver: How about R-e8. ..
Sep-21-07  chessic eric: <boz> and of course if 20...Qxc6 21.Nxc6,Rc8 22.Nc6-e7+
Sep-21-07  Ragh: <seaotter> A funny yet informative kibitz.
Sep-21-07  boz: Gelfand just has to reorganize. His King and Queen in particular.
Sep-21-07  outplayer: Morozevich tried a Petrosian-like exchange sac and lost.
Sep-21-07  Ragh: <themofro> You can see the countdown on both clocks at the top of this page too. Look right above Anand's pic.
