plang: 4..f5!? is a typically offbeat move by Speelman. 9 Qc2 was new; 9 Nf3 had been played previously. Speelman thought that 9 Qa4! would have been very awkward for Black. The middlegame complications were quite obscure; for instance, Speelman avoided 19..Nfxd5 20 exd..Nxd5 21 Nf6+!..Nxf6 22 Bxd6..Nd5 23 Qe5 when White is probably better. Short of time Bacrot missed 24 Qf4..Kc7 25 Nf6..Rb1 26 Rxb1..Qxb1+ 27 Kf2 when it appears that White's king is safer. Bacrot's second error 26 f6? was losing; 26 Rb1 was necessary keeping control of b1. At the board Speelman thought that 26 Rb1..Rd4? 27 cxd..c3 was winning for Black but it was later pointed out that 28 Be2! actually wins for White so Speelman would have had to settle for the unclear endgame after 26 Rb1..Qc2.
