Jonathan Sarfati: The books and leading players recommend the b4 ♙ sac, but Stockfish 12 is not impressed. It rates 13.a3 as a clear advantage for White.

Stockfish says 16...♗c6 was a losing move although hardly obvious?White should have responded 17.♘b5 (+4). 17.♗g5 was not as strong but still +2.5. 17...♖xd4 was also too dangerous. White's best was 18.♖c1 but the game move was good enough. 20.♖ab1 was not as strong as 20.a3.

At move 23, the best line was 23.♕a3 attacking a7, e.g. 23... ♕xb5 24.♗xa7+ ♔c8 25.♕c3+ ♕c6 26.♕xf6 ♖d8 27.♖fc1 ♖c4 28.♕f5+ ♖d7 29.♖e1 and Black's ♔ is too open to avoid loss of material. But that was a hard line to calculate.

The game move was still +2.5. Even though Black has a ♙ for the exchange, White's pieces are active and Black's minors have a hard time finding safe squares. The opposite-coloured ♗s help White, because White can dominate the light squares.
