May-19-07 | | Sboldm7: After 31)...Rxe8, it's 32)Rxe8+ Rf8 33)Rxf8# |
|
May-19-07 | | JG27Pyth: <D4n: Hmm..Black should have won this one. move # 31, Qe8+ as a reply should have been Rxe8, then it becomes a simple back row mate for Black.> D4n. When I find natural simple moves that GM's somehow missed -- I know I've missed something and recheck the position. After 31...Rxe8 White has mate in two.

 | | al wazir: <bogo78: 30. Rf1 and now black has to block the mate on h7.> What mate on h7? 29...Qc3 30. Rf1 Rf6 31. Nxf6+ Rxf6 32. Qh7+ Kf7. White is up an exchange for a ♙. |
|
May-19-07 | | Crowaholic: I saw Rh6 quickly and saw that White obtains a significant advantage if accepted (with 28. Ne6+ Qg5 29. Nxg5). Finding the best declining move turned out to be difficult, though, because it's not check and therefore there are so many possibilities. I tried some and found plausible follow-ups for White. Then I looked at the solution move for move, and after Black played 27. ..Qd3, to be honest, I didn't have the slightest clue about what to do next. |

May-19-07 | | bogo78: <What mate on h7? 29...Qc3 30. Rf1 Rf6 31. Nxf6+ Rxf6 32. Qh7+ Kf7. White is up an exchange for a P.> i don't get how can ...30 Rf6 be followed by ...31 Rxf6. At least one of those moves is done with the Queen. The order in which this happens is actually irrelevant since after 33 Rxf6 (capturing whatever piece is there-be it the R of the Q) white has a Q for a N and a P..which is more than enough to win |

 | | fm avari viraf: Instead of 28...f5 Black should have given up his Queen for the Knight & Rook to avoid such a disaster. But I think White's best Knockout punch would have been 28.Rh3 where Black is defenseless. |
|
May-19-07 | | Dr. J: <gauer><MostlyAverageJoe>
After 27 Rh6 Qd3 28 Ne4 g6 29 Nf6+ Kg7, even simpler is 30 Qg5 Rh8 31 Nh5+ Kg8 32 Rxh8+ Kxh8 33 Qh6(or f6)+ and mates next. I saw this after 28 Nh7 but missed the same thing after 28 Ne4. Silly of me. |

 | | GoldenKnight: <D4n: Hmm..Black should have won this one. move # 31, Qe8+ as a reply should have been Rxe8, then it becomes a simple back row mate for Black. As far as the puzzle goes, my first move would have been Qh4! Checkmate in the next turn.> You'd better look again. There are a couple of errors in your analysis. |

May-19-07 | | doctorwtf: Why was this puzzle posted again? It was just posted a week ago |
|
May-19-07 | | whatthefat: I was pleased to find 27.Rh6 Qd3 28.Nh7, but I'll admit I got lazy at that point and stopped analyzing, figuring the threat of Nf6+ was too much to handle. I suppose I really should have checked 28...f5 in greater detail. |
|
May-20-07 | | MostlyAverageJoe: <al wazir: <MostlyAverageJoe:>: What about the move I suggested, 29...Qc3 ?> You already found one possibility:
<al wazir: <bogo78: 30. Rf1 and now black has to block the mate on h7.> What mate on h7? 29...Qc3 30. Rf1 Rf6 31. Nxf6+ Qxf6 32. Qh7+ Kf7>
(Corrected 31 ... Rxf6 -> Qxf6 - MAJ)
I think he meant the mate threat after a possible 31.Ng5. Your line above prevents it. Continue your line 33. Rxf6+ Kxf6 34. Re1 and white wins easily. After 29...Qc3, the best for black is this line: 30. Rf1 Qd2 31. Ng5 Qxg5 32. Qxg5, again clearly won by white. Bottom line: 29...Qc3 is not good. 29 ... Qd6 would be best. <Dr. J: <gauer><MostlyAverageJoe> After 27 Rh6 Qd3 28 Ne4 g6 29 Nf6+ Kg7, even simpler is 30 Qg5 Rh8 31 Nh5+ Kg8 32 Rxh8+ Kxh8 33 Qh6(or f6)+ and mates next.> Black can delay this by one move (30 ... Qf1+), so it ends up maiting in the same number of moves as the two lines I've shown. |
|
May-20-07 | | MostlyAverageJoe: <fm avari viraf: I think White's best Knockout punch would have been 28.Rh3 where Black is defenseless.> Not really: 28 ... Qg6! saves the day for the black after 28.Rh3? |

 | | al wazir: <bogo78, MostlyAverageJoe>: Yes, I meant 31...Qxf6. And yes, white wins anyway. Thanks. |
|
May-21-07 | | kevin86: A comical final position. Almost every piece is under attack. The white queen is attacked twice, the rook twice, the knight once, and the other rook once. Mate,of course follows at g6 after gxf6 |

 | | fm avari viraf: <MostlyAverageJoe> Actually, I did't give the line after 28.Rh3 Qd2? which I missed to mention as 29.Rh8+ Kxh8 & it's mate in 2 but after 28...Qg6 29.Qh4 Qh6 and a long battle ahead. |

Feb-18-22 | | Brenin: At the end, White is a P down, all his pieces, Q+2R+N, are under attack, and a back rank mate is looming. A good time for a resignation. |

Lovely composition. 1.Nd4 looks like a solution. |

Feb-18-22 | | LoveThatJoker: GM Efimov is the first GM I ever beat in my blitz chess career. I came back from an inferior position and played a great endgame. Time control was 3+0. Year was 2009, I believe. LTJ
PS. <FSR> Nice pun. |
