Kibitzer's Corner
May-13-17  nummerzwei: I'm currently reading Pachmann's 'Entscheidungspartien' which has also appeared in English, clumsily titled 'Decisive Games in Chess History'.

It is a book with an interesting premise, but also, frequently, flawed analytically. Let's take a look at what Pachmann has to say about the final position (He has 42.Ke3, incidentally.):

'After 42...Ke7 43.Kf4 Ke6

the tempo saved up by White on the queenside decides: 44.b3'

In concrete variations, though, it turns out that 44.b3? only draws, precisely because it prematurely spills the reserve tempo: After 44...a6 45.a4 a5 Black doesn't fall into zugzwang. The only other line that comes into consideration is 45.a3 b5! 46.cxb5 (46.a4 bxa4 47.bxa4 a5=) ...axb5, but now 47.Ke3 is not enough to win, while 47.a4? c4 even loses.

The actual win is 44.a3 a6 45.a4! a5 46.b3, winning the f5-pawn.
