Oct-07-06 | | Suzuki50: <banjo> Certainly 26...Bf8 27 Rxc6+ winning, but 27. Rhg1 could be nicer !? |
Oct-07-06
 | | OhioChessFan: Nobody has mentioned it, but why doesn't the simple 20. Bxc5 work? I knew that wasn't the solution, being a Saturday puzzle and all, but I can't find much for Black. I've gotten to the point where I sort of feel the Bishop has to leave the h file with tempo, but it's hard to believe that tempo is worth a Queen. Maybe Bxc5 followed by Bf1? If this post sounds confused, that would be indicative of my thoughts. |
Oct-07-06 | | aazqua: Both qe6 and bh6 are easy to spot. Unfortuantely, bh6 doesn't quite do it. Qe6 shows just how devoid the king is of good squares. The queen sac isn't really a sac - the king is completely trapped and material becomes irrelevent. Black's black bishop is worth a queen at the end. |
Oct-07-06
 | | gawain: Really, what else could it possibly have been but a dramatic thrust by the queen into the heart of Black's position? Saw it immedately, then it was only a matter or working out the details after either 21...Rf7 or 21...Kh8 |
Oct-07-06 | | lilfoohk: Got it
Always crazyness rules. |
Oct-07-06 | | wharfrat: <ronaldducalang> 29.R:d6 wins because queen moves are answered with 30.Rd8 mate. |
Oct-07-06 | | outplayer: I have seen the move in a quick glance. |
Oct-07-06 | | GoHabsGo: 20.♕e6+ ♘xe6 21.♗xe6+ ♔h8 22.♗xh6 then
1) 22... gxh6 leads to ruyv's line which forces mate
2) 22... ♗h4 23.♗g5 ♖f7 24.gxf7 g6 25.♗f6+ ♔h7 26.♖xh4++ |

Oct-07-06 | | Minty: <OhioChessFan: Nobody has mentioned it, but why doesn't the simple 20. Bxc5 work?> I had a long look at 20. Bxc5, and I don't think it works. For example, 20. Bxc5 bxc5 21. Bf1 Bxf2, and white doesn't really have any threats, and black has an annoying check on e3 to cover h6 if he needs it. Something more direct like 20. Bxc5 bxc5 21. Qe6+ Kh8 22. Bf5 seems to fail to 22... Rd6 |
Oct-07-06
 | | OhioChessFan: Thanks <Minty> That e3 check is the fly in the ointment. It comes up in 3 different lines I tried. |
Oct-07-06 | | ksh123: Wonderful finish! There was no escape for Black after 20 Qe6+. |
Oct-07-06 | | pawntificator: That was awesome. |
Oct-07-06
 | | Jonathan Sarfati: Just a hint for some of these long combinations: sometimes it's good enough to make sure there is an escape route. Even Kasparov during his "immortal against Topalov Kasparov vs Topalov, 1999 said it was not all calculated from the start, but he knew he could bail out with a perpetual if he couldn't see something more a few moves on. In this game, it would be reasonably safe to see that White gains R+N+P+attack for the Q, even though Bc5+ is not too onerous to see from the start. |
Oct-07-06 | | midknightblue: hello pawntif. The first move seemed inevitable-if the finish could be calculated. tough problem, well done to all that had the line calculated to perfection |
Oct-08-06 | | kevin86: A great finale! White sacs the queen to open up lines and diagonals for his bishops and rooks. There is no escape! |
Apr-05-08 | | ToTheDeath: Amazing finish. Kova was an animal. |
Nov-29-12 | | Wyatt Gwyon: lol. You could see the storm brewing from about move eight or nine. |
Jan-31-21 | | ndg2: Not insane, not even very difficult, IMHO |
Jan-31-21 | | sudoplatov: I found this one quickly by looking for a method of unscreening the White Rooks. Qe6+ then Be6+ uncovers the White h1 Rook (I assume it's the King's Rook but they both look alike.) Then Bxh6 and Rxh6+ become possible. Black's King seems rather cramped. |
Jan-31-21 | | Walter Glattke: This is a criminal constellation, where the White pokerface in coffeehousss or bistros plays bd3/be3/qd2/0-0-0/rg1/rh1 and the landegg has to play "encyclopaedia" waiting moves like nf6/g6/0-0 qc7/a5 to get looted then for a hypothek of his fathers acre.
20.Bxh6 wins, the specticular queen sac with 20.Qe6 is not credible and shows, how manipulated this alcohol constellation really is. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Amazed to have solved it but then realized had written the same thing in 2006. Weird week--4/4, already knew Friday, Saturday, Sunday. |
Jan-31-21 | | Brenin: Declining the Q is no help for Black, e.g. 20 Qe6+ Kh8 21 Bxh6 Bf6 (21 ... Nxe6 22 Bxe6) 22 Bd2, with mate along the h-file to follow. |
Jan-31-21 | | Brenin: My first attempt, the routine 20 Bxc5 Bxc5 21 Qe6+ Kh8 fails, e.g. 22 Bf5 Rd6: the White Q is trapped, and the Black Q protects g7, so 23 Rxh6+ loses to gxh6 24 g7+ Qxg7. |
Jan-31-21 | | ndg2: <Walter Glattke: This is a criminal constellation,..> Lol, this is good! |
