May-24-22 | | WickedPawn: GM Gildardo García accepted my invitation for dinner during a 2005 tournament (he finished second after Korchnoi). A memorable day in my life. That’s the kind of person he was. Thank you again Maestro. |

May-24-22 | | Granny O Doul: When you see a good move, look for a better one. Then another, and another, and another. |

May-24-22 | | saturn2: 24.Nxf7 Rxf7 (gxf6 25.Qg4 mate) 25.Rxf7 will lose the queen |
May-24-22 | | agb2002: White has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair. The bishop x-rays the black king. This suggests Rxf7 and Nxf7. In the case of 24.Nxf7:
A) 24... gxf6 25.Qg4#.
B) 24... g6 25.Nd8+ Kg7 (25... Kh8 26.Rxf8+ Kg7 27.Ne6+ Kh6 28.Qd2+ and mate in two) 26.Ne6+ wins decisive material. C) 24... Rxf7 25.Rxf7 wins decisive material.
D) 24... Rb1+ 25.Rd1 Rxd1+ 26.Qxd1 Rb8 27.Nd8+ wins decisive material (27... Kh8 28.Rf8#). E) 24... Rb2 25.Nd8+ Rxa2 26.Rxf8+ Kxf8 27.Ne6+ wins decisive material. |
May-24-22 | | Brenin: I think 22 ... gxf6 would have been good for Black, winning the exchange and surviving the attack. |
May-24-22 | | saturn2: 24.Bxf7 <Rb2 25.Nd8+ Rxa2 26.Rxf8+ Kxf8 27.Ne6+ wins decisive material> The doublecheck 25...Nh6 wins quicker |
May-24-22 | | Brenin: <saturn2>: Indeed, 24 Nxf7 (not Bxf7) Rb2 25 Nh6+ is a lot quicker than 25 Nd8+: after 25 ... Kh8 (forced) 26 Rxf8 is mate. |
May-24-22 | | Stanco: I opted for 24.Nf5 and etc... |
May-24-22 | | TheaN: I was kind of certain Black's busted in this position either way, but still, some accuracy is necessary. All moves win by the same principle: White's attack wins. Slip up, and it's likely Black's instantly better. <24.Nxf7> presents Black with the most problems. For a while, I got stumped a bit by 24....Rb1+, but White should just ignore this and play the simple 25.Rd1! After <24....Rxf7 25.Rxf7 +-> Black's losing a lot of material. Otherwise, the immediate threat of Rxc6 with Nxe5+ is hard to cope with. |

 | | chrisowen: "Head Leader" |
May-24-22 | | DrGridlock: The "tricky" part of the puzzle is that just about any move wins for White so it's hard to pick just >one<. Black's game continuation is not his best play, so before deciding on 24 Nxf7 you also have to calculate better defenses for black, beginning with the check 24 ... Rb1+, which deflects either the bishop from its brutal pin on the h2 - g8 diagonal or the rook from moving quickly onto the g file. Does white still have enough gas in the tank after these diversions? ... "yes" White does. Is it a quicker win for white to take with the Rook on f7? This position is never going to be anything but won by white: Gildardo Garcia - Bernard Zuckerman 1-0 0.0, New York Open 1986
