WHITE TO MOVE

16,Nd1? was a meek move, lacking energy. More in the spirit of the Sicilian would have been perhaps 16.a4! bxa4 17.Ra1, for example: 17...Bxc3 18.bxc3 f5 19.e5, and White has the bishop pair and some counterplay to compensate for his slight material deficit. (See diagram below):

WHITE TO MOVE

Had White played here 18.Bc3, then his 16th move (Nd1) would have been justified (if his idea was to exchange Black's useful dark-squared bishop). Nevertheless, he played 16.c3? which is a pointless move, and after 18...Ba7! Black's attack started to become very dangerous. Otherwise, White could have tried 18.Bb4 with approximate equality.

Apr-22-23  Gaito: I have always suspected that Judit Polgar has been something like a modern version of Paul Morphy in the form of a woman. Her skill in the attack is immense, and her ability to snatch tactical opportunities and see combinations is beyond all praise. Furthermore her opening repertorie has always been broader than that of Paul Morphy.
