Nov-14-14 | | TheFocus: From a simul in Havana, Cuba in February, 1893.
Lasker scored =19=0-2. |
|
Oct-23-23 | | YandyRB: Hi, does anyone know in which magazine or newspaper this game was originally published? |
|
Oct-23-23
 | | jnpope: New York <Sun>, 1893.03.26, Section 2, p6.

The <Sun> is the earliest source I have. La Biblioteca Virtual de Prensa Histórica (https://prensahistorica.mcu.es/en/p...) is missing the evening edition of the <Diario de la Marina> for January-June, 1893, so I cannot check to see if it originated from that newspaper. |
|
Oct-28-23 | | YandyRB: Thank you very much Nick Pope, The Sun is a magnificent reference. In fact, La Biblioteca Virtual de Prensa Histórica does not have the evening edition of this and other years and the originals from the José Martí National Library are very deteriorated without having been previously scanned. I take this opportunity to ask you if you know a reliable reference for the simultaneous game Lasker vs Enrique Delmonte, Havana 1906. |

 | | jnpope: Lasker vs E Delmonte, 1906? The best I can do at the moment is <The Collected Games of Emanuel Lasker>, Ken Whyld, Nottingham, The Chess Player, 1998, p120. Whyld cites as his source: "MS score from Nepomuceno." The <Diario de la Marina>, 1906.02.20, Evening Edition, p4, lists Enrique Delmonte as one of the 11 simul participants given the night before. A number of the games given during Lasker's trip to Havana where Whyld cites "MS score from Nepomuceno" as his source, appear to come from the <Diario de la Marina> evening editions, but the Delmonte game does not appear to be found in the issues available to me. |

Nov-25-23 | | YandyRB: Thank you very much Nick Pope. The Collected Games of Emanuel Lasker by Ken Whyld is a good reference, although in the future I hope to find a primary reference. Unfortunately I do not own Whyld's book. In the Diario de la Marina I have not been able to find it, accessing the physical archives of the National Library of Havana. One more question, what do the letters MS mean? |
|
Nov-26-23
 | | jnpope: MS is an abbreviation for manuscript, meaning written by hand. It appears Nepomuceno wrote down the games published in the <Diario de la Marina> and Whyld had access to these handwritten notes. |
|
Nov-30-23 | | YandyRB: Thank you very much Nick Pope. Did you receive my email of November 25? The topic is La Bourdonnais and McDonnell. You, as an expert on the subject, will know if they are accurate comments and if, consequently, they deserve to be published.
Regarding Whyld's book on Lasker, can you tell me the range of pages that contains the games in Havana in 1893 and 1906? |
|
Dec-01-23
 | | jnpope: I'm away from my archives and library until Monday. I got notification of the emails but I won't be able to dive into them until my return. If someone doesn't answer your question regarding Whyld's book I'll post the answer Monday once I have access to my library. |
