Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-05-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: It seems easy: 13...Bxc3+ 14. bxc3 Qxc3+ 15. Bd2 Qxa1+... if don't capture: 13...Bxc3+ 14. Ke2 Qc4+ 15. Kd1 Rad8+ 16. Kc1 Bd2+ 17. Kd1 Qc2+ 18. Ke2 Bd3# or 14. Kd1 Rad8+ 15. Kc1 Bd2+ 16. Kd1 Qc2+ 17. Ke2 Bd3.

So, W has to interpose: 14... Rad8+ 15. Bd2 Rxd2+ 16. Qxd2 Bxd2 17. Kxd2 Rd8+ 18. Ke1 Qc2... etc.

Oct-05-23  Brenin: Instructive for beginners, too obvious for the rest.
Oct-05-23  mel gibson: That was fairly obvious.

Stockfish 16 says:

13. .. Bxc3+

(13. .. Bxc3+ (Bg7xc3+ b2xc3 Qc6xc3+ Qf2-d2 Qc3xa1+ Ke1-f2 Rf8-c8 Kf2-g3 Rc8-c2 Qd2-b4 Rc2-b2 Be3-d4 Rb2xb4 Bd4xa1 Rb4-b1 Ba1-d4 Bf5-d3 a2-a4 Rb1xf1 Rh1xf1 Bd3xf1 a4-a5 Bf1-a6 Kg3-h4 f7-f6 Kh4-g3 Kg8-f7 h2-h4 Kf7-e8 f3-f4 Ra8-d8 Bd4-f2 Rd8-d5 Kg3-h2 Ke8-d7 f4-f5 Rd5-d6) +6.30/44 215)

score for Black +6.30 depth 44.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Much to my astonishment, after the logical looking 5.Be3 White fares badly in the database, and after 7.Qd2 White fares even worse. Even the awful looking 5.c3 has better results. Had no idea the Hyperaccelerated Dragon contained so many traps.

perfidious: <Englishman>, have to admit it is a puzzle to me why 5.Be3 makes such a miserable score, and as you say, a worse one than after the otiose looking 5.c3; the trouble for Black is that if his opponent opts for the Maroczy Bind, everything changes. That is a line with a strong drawing tendency, albeit with few winning chances for Black. Made a living as White off playing those positions by transposition after such debuts as 1.c4 c5 or 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 c5, etc.
