An Englishman: Good Evening: The lines of the Philidor where White plays Ng5, Bxf7+, Ne6, Nxc7 and Nxa8 rank among the strangest in chess. I used to play the Black side of this line a lot in blitz vs. a player who refused to believe in my chances.

During the unique complications of this variation, it is not unusual for Black to almost simultaneously attack and retreat. Note how here he attacks from moves 12-14 and immediately retreats from 15-19 and then charges forward from 22-26.

White's resignation might be a little premature, but Black does have threats. Aside from the immediate 27...Bxd5 and 28...Nxb4, he also threatens to checkmate the White Queen with 27...Nd4, 28...g7-g6 and 29...Nf5.
