OhioChessFan: I was looking at the Opening Explorer for the Opening of the day, and noticed White's amazing 3rd move. That led me to this game. Awful play by Black, from moves 4-7. What was the point of the exchange of Bishops on g5? In those 4 moves, in effect, he moved his Queen from d8 to e7, while White developed both Knights and played e4. Game over.

When I am not mistaken, I bumped into 3.a4 when playing over a match game Bogolyubov-Alekhine. Nimzovich annotated a 1.d4 c5 2.d5 e5 game and suggested 3.a4.Not so strange as it looks, claiming the white squares ( such as b5 - and c4, where a white knight could land - ). The exchange of the bad bishop is common strategy in this line. The real mistakes come later, in my opinion ..
