Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-19-05  Fischer of Men: Steinitz goes for extra style points instead of 31.Qb7#. Of course, it was probably to spite an opponent who didn't resign when facing four different mating threats after 29.Qxf7.
Jan-16-07  Maxwell843: why doesn't Eschwege take the queen i.e. 29...Qxf7 ???
Jan-16-07  syracrophy: <Maxwell843> 29...♕xf7 30.♗xd6+ ♕c7 31.♗xc7#
Jun-19-12  RookFile: Interesting game and observation by Fischer of Men. Obviously Steinitz saw the quicker mate (he wouldn't have played Qxf7 in the first place if he didn't see it.) A little gamesmanship at the end.

MissScarlett: The game was published in the <Field> of January 6th 1872, p.21, as a <brilliant game played a few days ago between Mr Steinitz and an amateur,> with the ending <30.Ke1 Qe7 31.Bxd6+ Qxd6 32.Qb7#>, so, if correct, there's a query over the year but no quicker mate.

As to the identity of the columnist: <The column returned in January 1870 and for the next three years the editorship passed from Boden to Cecil de Vere to Steinitz with unclear transition dates. By the end of 1873 Steinitz was definitely appointed.> (Harding, British Chess Literature to 1914, McFarland, p.311)
