  Honza Cervenka: Why 0-1?
Sep-07-07  sneaky pete: <Honza Cervenka> An unfinished game from round 8, Schwarz resigned this game and withdrew from the tournament at this point.

  Honza Cervenka: <sneaky pete> Thanks.

Btw, do you know the reason why he did it just in the middle of this game?

  Tabanus: Neues Wiener Journal, 12 June 1898 p. 5:

"Die gestrige Runde brachte eine kleine Ueberraschung: Schwarz hat seinen Austritt aus dem Turnier angemeldet. Er hat bis nun nur einen halben Zähler (Remispartie) und das scheint ihm so zu Herzen gegangen zu sein, das er nicht mehr mitthun will."

Bad transl.:

Yesterday's round brought a small surprise: Black announced his withdrawal from the tournament. So far he only has half a point (drawn game) and that seems to have taken such a toll on him that he no longer wants to take part.

jnpope: I think that should be: "<Schwarz> announced his withdrawal from the tournament. So far he only has half a point (drawn game) and that seems to have taken such a toll on him that he no longer wants to take part."

Schwarz's name shouldn't be part of the translation, as the translation reads as if Walbrodt, playing black, had resigned from the tournament. ;-)

  Tabanus: Sure enough:

Yesterday's round brought a small surprise: Schwarz announced his withdrawal from the tournament. So far he only has half a point (drawn game) and that seems to have taken such a toll on him that he no longer wants to take part.

He could have tried 19.Bd1 and if 19...Nb6, then 20.h5 and he might have won instead.

Feb-03-24  stone free or die: In these kind of cases I put an underscore in front of the name, or some such hack.

You can sometimes actually instruct Google Translate to use your favorite translation - but in the case of such a common term (Black), probably not a good idea.
