Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-10-05  patzer2: White's passed pawn combination with 44. c4? self-destructs after Shirov's counter attacking defensive move 46. Qa7+! It's interesting that Shirov won two games in this tournament by coaxing his GM opponents into such unsound combinations.

Relatively better was 44. Qc5!? when White has practical drawing chances. Play might go 45.Qc5!? Kf8 46.Qe3 Kg8 47.Ra2 Qb6 48.Qxb6 Rdxb6 49.Ra7 Rb7 50.Rxb7 Rxb7 51.Rc2 Rc7 52.Ke3 Rc6 53.Kd4 Rd6+ 54.Kxc4 Rxe6 55.Kd4 Re1 56.f4 Kf7 57.Rc6 Rg1 58.Rc3 Ke6 59.Ke4 Re1+ 60.Kf3 Kf5 61.Rc7 e6 62.Ra7 Rf1+ 63.Ke2 Rb1 64.Rf7 Rb3 65.Kf2 Rc3 66.Rf8 Rc2+ 67.Kf3 Rc1 68.Rf7 Rc3+ 69.Kf2 Rc2+ 70.Kf3 Ra2 . Of course against a Super GM like Shirov, it might be slow torture and a win for Black in the endgame, but putting up this resistance is much better than falling into Black's clearly decisive trap after 44. c4?
